Job Description
Position Overview
The DCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) is one of the most progressive school food programs in the country and was recently recognized by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine with a Golden Carrot Award for its healthy and innovative school food. The scope of DCPS OFNS’ operations extends beyond school meals to include nutrition-related activities such as school gardens and farm-to-school as well as environmental sustainability and stewardship initiatives for cafeteria operations. The mission of the DCPS OFNS is to provide DCPS students with appetizing school meals made from fresh, locally produced ingredients and to engage the entire D.C. community in implementing food programs that encourage healthy decision-making and promote sustainable practice.
This position works to ensure the DCPS maintains a 100% level of compliance with all USDA and state-level regulations with respect to school nutrition guidelines, including, but not limited to, school meal requirements and competitive foods. This person will also develop and facilitate nutrition-based programming and be responsible for structuring student feedback mechanisms and collecting student feedback on a routine basis. This person will initiate a Student Advisory Board and manage its activities and will be the OFNS liaison to all student government organizations. This person will develop a nutrition curriculum or set of annual nutrition-related activities and coordinate these activities with teachers and school administrators.
The Nutrition Services Coordinator reports to the Manager of Compliance & Special Programs.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates or implements several small or medium-sized projects/programs, or components of a larger project/program pertaining to food promotion, nutrition, or meal consumption
- Develops and manages a comprehensive food quality evaluation system to include student taste testings, focus groups, and surveys; analyzes all student data drawn from evaluation; and presents OFNS’ findings to the vendors staff to improve operations
- Creates and manages the DCPS Student Advisory Board
- Develops and implements all student-level initiatives including educational campaigns
- Liaises with teachers and administrators to promote food-based or experiential education opportunities
- Makes process recommendations for programs or services to improve the experience of the customer
- Provides timely responses to customer service requests and implements process improvements to DCPS OFNS’ customer service response system
- Develops, implements, maintains, and revises procedures for the general operation of the DCPS compliance program and its related activities to ensure total compliance with all regulations
- Coordinates all compliance-related activities including NSLP and CACFP reviews, FFVP application collection, and the NSLP application process
- Provides assistance for any and all audits of DCPS Food Service program
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Job Requirements
Educational Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of work experience required • Registered Dietitian (RD) or teaching credentials preferred
