Advisor/Head Coach for Speech and Debate –

The advisor/coach for Speech and Debate at Acton Boxborough Regional High School works with a large group of enthusiastic, smart, creative and competitive groups of 9 – 12 graders. The team meets twice weekly on Monday and Friday after school until 5pm for practice. Tournaments are held primarily on Saturdays beginning in October (approx. 2 per month).

Responsibilities of the advisor (shared if more than one) include but are not limited to:

  1. Collecting and maintaining student registration materials/forms (both school required and team specific)
  2. Collecting and maintaining student and parent contact information (phone, email, social media)
  3. Supervising practices from September through early April, teaching and coaching events as ability allows
  4. Mentoring/managing the student team leaders (captains) as they teach/mentor/manage their peers
  5. Attending team sanctioned tournament trips or arranging for appropriate adult (CORI cleared and trained) coverage
  6. Arranging bus transportation or car pools for student travel to tournaments
  7. Managing team finances with the assistance of the school bookkeeper
  8. Promoting the team in the school and wider community
  9. Maintaining team memberships in the Massachusetts Speech and Debate League and two National Leagues
  10. Assisting students/parents with travel plans for National Championship tournaments in May and June
