Job Description Summary

The Falangola-Jensen research lab is seeking a Research Specialist I with experience in animal neuroscience research to collect and analyze data for an ongoing NIH funded project pertaining to a mouse model of Alzheimer’s Disease.

The individual should be able to take direction from others, work in a team environment, work independently, and be a troubleshooter. Applicants from under-represented populations in biomedical research are strongly encouraged to apply. This position has funding for at least 3 ½ years with the possibility of extension.

Job Description

Job Duties:
35% - Animal maintenance work:  The candidate will be responsible for ordering and care of animals, which includes labeling (ear punching), daily feeding and carefully checking the physical condition of the animals by evaluating grooming, posture, and physical state. Candidate will also measure food intake daily and body weight weekly.

25% - Animal experiments: The candidate will be responsible for independently performing experiments, including cardiac perfusion, rapid brain dissection and tissue separation and collection.

20% - Data Analysis: Use a variety of programs such as Excel, Graphpad Prism, ImageJ, MATLAB, and other programs as needed to evaluate and analyze data.

10% - Laboratory management: The candidate will be responsible for ordering reagents, organizing the laboratory stocks, getting packages, and communicating with vendors. The candidate will also perform basic lab maintenance - responsibilities include glassware washing, solution making, and laboratory organization.

5% - Refine and standardize existing experimental procedures; participates in development of new procedures.

5% - Participate in laboratory and departmental events – The candidate will attend laboratory meetings (and may be asked to present data), departmental seminars (when possible), and potentially present data at local or national conferences.

Preferred Experience & Additional Skills:

Bachelor's degree in science, experience with mice, and a passion for research.

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
