General Statement of Duties

Manages the Student Health Service program for the improvement and protection of the health of the students in accordance with state law and local policy and procedures.

Essential Duties

  • Effectively manages the health clinic by following standards of nursing practice, following procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by Student Health Services.
  • Reviews, tracks, and follows-up with immunizations, conditional enrollments, and physicals of all new students entering school.
  • Creates cumulative health folders for new students and maintains organized, accurate, and up-to-date records.
  • Per protocol, collects, documents, tracks, stores and counts medications, medication forms, treatments, and medical procedures and enters into the Medication Log.
  • Establish and maintain standards of emergency care to minimize the effects of accidents and illnesses in the school.
  • Reviews, organizes, and tracks all Health History Forms, medical conditions, student clinic visits, follows-up with medical conditions, creates Chronic Health Reports, documents students without insurance, and creates a tickler file for students with emergency information.
  • Provides essential delegated nursing tasks per protocol and within scope of LPN practice. Tasks include but aren't limited to: first aid, CPR, emergency care, acute and chronic student health needs, medications administration, specialized health procedures, care for students with special education needs, screenings, health related 504 and IEP interventions, and other tasks as directed.
  • Observes the health needs of students during clinic visits, screenings, chart reviews, physician referrals and other modes of communication and reports the information to the registered nurse overseeing the school.
  • Collaborates with assigned registered nurse in completing assignments, reporting data, and communicating pertinent school health concerns.
  • Communicates pertinent student health information to required staff in an effective verbal and/or written format, per policy.
  • Refers students to health, medical, social, educational, and other resources as required within parameters established by policy, this includes but is not limited to mandated reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect, immunizations, communicable disease, and others. Treatment provided within the scope of practice per the Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations.
  • Reviews, tracks, and follows-up with student health documentation on required forms, per protocol and standards of nursing practice.
  • Practices effective case management per nursing standards and policy.
  • Serves as a member of the school safety committee.
  • Maintains a well-equipped and organized clinic.
  • Assembles a substitute folder, per protocol, to be used in the absence of the school nurse.
  • Coordinates, attends, and/or presents at various parent, student, and staff meetings included but not limited to School-based Teams, 504 Meetings, IEP Meetings, Trainings, and others as required.
  • Provides care for students with chronic and severe health, emotional, social, and educational conditions.
  • Assists physician in health assessment of special education students, secures parental permission and provides follow-up.
  • Trains and tracks staff on OSHA regulations, anaphylaxis, and other requirements as needed per protocol.
  • Maintains appropriate OSHA standards and practices within school setting.
  • Effectively manages clinic budget.
  • Functions as a contributing member of the school staff and school health team in all aspects of the school program.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and practices standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Serves as a student advocate within the established parameters and guidelines set forth by professional practice and in policy.
  • Practices sound judgment in the prioritization and care of student needs.
  • Encourages a well-nourished school population.
  • Refers students primary medical care providers for evaluation with treatment and follow-up for suspected health problems.
  • Reports compliance with state laws including but not limited to: immunization, exclusion of students with contagious diseases, chronic health conditions, screenings, outbreaks, and others as needed per supervisor request.
  • Promotes health and disease prevention to encourage a healthy community.
  • Attends scheduled in-services and training classes to increase knowledge and skills in job responsibilities.
  • Attends school, community, and professional meetings as requested.
  • Maintains professional licenses.
  • Attends work daily, timely, and engaged and on task.
  • Performs other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of high school or equivalent. Completion of state certified licensed practical nursing program. Current license to practice as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Knowledge of basic pharmacology. Knowledge of, and ability to use clinic medical equipment. Ability to lift students as required. Knowledge and practice of Standard precautions. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Basic knowledge of standard computer software, internet, and email. Must have a valid Virginia Driver's License.

Additional Information

The minimum salary for this 209 day/ 8 hour per day position is $40,258..

The annual salary for this position will be prorated based upon the official start date.
