Job Description Summary

MUSC’s Office of Communications & Marketing [OCM] seeks a Director of Engagement & Outreach to join its senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Communications & Marketing Officer. The Director of Engagement & Outreach will play a vital role in supporting growth and outreach efforts for both the university and health system. This position will oversee a team focused on improving communication and awareness of MUSC’s programs and services available, both internally and in the community at large, with the goal to increase patient leads and retention, expand participation in new programs, and strengthen brand loyalty for MUSC. This role requires a dynamic leader with proven experience building impactful and beneficial partnerships and a deep understanding of working within an academic healthcare setting.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

Partnership Engagement

  • Drive MUSC & provider engagement locally through participation in community and chamber events and meetings, health screenings, etc.
  • Support faculty and research efforts through participation in educational symposiums, health fairs, industry events, association meetings and other engagement opportunities
  • Align with MUSC’s Office of External Affairs to maximize strategic partnership engagement and sponsorships across the enterprise
  • Develop metrics to measure effectiveness of engagement initiatives and provide regular reports to senior management

Outreach

  • Support the health system’s access initiatives to reduce patient/service leakage, partner with physician access liaison to understand referral patterns and collaborate with divisional and ICCE leaders to develop engagement plans to target prioritized markets and/or practices
  • Collaboratively define KPIs and metrics that support outreach needs and regularly report progress to senior management and ICCE leaders
  • Promote new providers & faculty internally to MUSC team members
  • Build 1:1 relationships with providers, faculty, researchers, and program managers to better support their engagement and outreach needs
  • Develop relationships with referring practices and providers; coordinate outreach visits for MUSC clinical leaders
  • Establish external network via industry and association meetings
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of MUSC sponsorship events and other initiatives

Growth Management

  • Support growth initiatives across the collective MUSC enterprise [university, health system divisions, ICCE, etc.]
  • Foster the integration and alignment between the health system and college programs available for working clinicians to advance their careers
  • Promote new programs for the enterprise, including the university, physician group and clinical areas, establish strategies to meet the growth goals

Onboarding

  • Oversee new provider onboarding for the Office of Communications and Marketing in collaboration with the marketing and communications teams, to include headshots, online profile, video bios, targeted marketing collateral, etc.
  • Standardize and manage MUSC’s provider & potentially the faculty directory, both for internal and external parties
  • Develop individualized media engagement plans for new providers based on their area of expertise and the strategic direction/need of the enterprise

Minimum Requirements

Education

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business administration, healthcare administration, marketing/communications, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience

8+ years’ progressive experience in marketing and communications and/or community or external affairs required, with 4+ years’ experience in a leadership capacity; prior experience working in an academic healthcare organization is also required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven experience managing and working in a matrixed, cross-functional team environment, with a high degree of complexity and ambiguity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively, gain credibility, and quickly establish trusting relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Outstanding communication skills, including oral, written, and presentation
  • Proven ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results
  • Experience developing and communicating executive level reporting
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing an effective team
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative group
  • Willingness to travel to support outreach and engagement initiatives
  • Self-starter who has proven leadership skills and the ability to make sound decisions
  • Experience with targeted marketing that includes campaigns that target students, providers or physicians
  • Experience with marketing automation tools and working with large data sets
