Job Summary:

As a crucial member of the care team, the Genetics Counselor at Duke Cardiology in Morrisville, NC is responsible for helping individuals and families understand the genetic basis of cardiovascular conditions. Your expertise will guide patients through genetic testing options, provide counseling on management strategies, and contribute to preventive measures. You’ll collaborate closely with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for patients with inherited cardiovascular diseases.

Job Summary:

  • Establish a mutually agreed upon genetic counseling agenda with the patient and their family.
  • Elicit an appropriate and inclusive family history and medical information including pregnancy, developmental and medical histories. Elicit a psychosocial history.
  • Convey genetic, medical and technical information including, but not limited to diagnosis, etiology, natural history, prognosis and treatment/management of genetic conditions and /or birth defects to patients and their families.
  • Explain technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening methods and reproductive options including associated risks, benefits, and limitations.
  • Assess and calculate genetic and teratogenic risks. Identify and synthesize, organize, and summarize pertinent medical and genetic information.
  • Facilitate the identification of a course of action for patients and families which seems to them appropriate in view of their risks, family goals, and their ethical and religious standards.
  • Promote understanding of the medical, ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic science through the training of genetic counseling students, residents and medical students, as well as participation in continuing education efforts for other health care providers within the Duke University Healthcare System and the greater Duke University community.
  • Teach classes for genetic counseling students, medical genetics fellows, residents, and medical students.
  • Participate in Research and Grant Development by developing and participating in research in genetic counseling and medical genetics, develop institutional review board protocols, and participate in writing clinical research grants.
  • Maintain and improve current knowledge of complex genetic issues, attend appropriate lectures, conferences, rounds, and regional/national meetings.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements:

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. degree in Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC) accredited training program.
  • One year of clinical experience as a board eligible genetic counselor or genetic counselor intern.
  • American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) board certified. If the employee is not board certified, he/she must be actively pursuing board certification.

Job Schedule:

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
