Multnomah County is governed by a five-member Board of County Commissioners. The County Chair is elected at-large and serves as the County’s CEO.  The county has 4,500+ employees and an annual budget of $1.5 billion. The County includes 10 departments: Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney, Auditor, Human Services, Community Services, Health, Library, Community Justice, Management and Assets.

Health Department

The Health Department is the local public health authority for Multnomah County’s 735,000+ residents. The Health Department includes Oregon’s largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the Integrated Clinical Services (ICS) division. ICS provides services through Corrections (3 sites), School-Based (13 sites), Primary Care  (8 sites), Dental  (6 sites), and HIV (1 site) health centers.

The Community 

Multnomah County contains Portland, the state’s largest city and county seat. Portland is located in northwestern Oregon where the Columbia and Willamette rivers meet. The Portland metropolitan area includes the cities of Portland, Gresham, Beaverton, Lake Oswego and more than a dozen other cities and towns, and has a combined population of 2.2 million.

In recent years, Portland has been featured nationally as one of the most livable and desirable communities. Portland offers natural splendor and urban amenities alike.

Educational institutions include eight school districts, numerous private schools, vocational schools, two community college systems and five universities including Portland State University, Oregon Health & Science University and Reed College.

The region has a vibrant cultural scene, including jazz and blues festivals, the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Oregon Ballet, and many museums, theater companies and concert venues. Sports teams include the NBA Portland Trailblazers, and the MLS Portland Timbers.

Portland is recognized for its world-class restaurant scene and has been named the best city in the world for street vendor food. The city has a robust public transportation system, and is one of the nation’s most bike-friendly cities.

Portland is surrounded by the nation’s largest urban park, and has hiking and skiing opportunities 90 minutes away at Mt. Hood. The Oregon coast is a short drive away and offers pristine beaches, rugged coves and quiet coastal communities.
