Job Description:

VCU Health System's SP Administration is seeking a full time Patient Access Supervisor to manage and provide operational oversight to the office/business functions of assigned area(s). This may include a combination of some or all of the following: reception; insurance verification; patient scheduling; patient registration; and co-pay/co-insurance collection. Supervises registration/scheduling staff (approximately 12+ FTEs) in multiple clinics/geographic locations to ensure efficient and effective operations. Optimizes staff performance through coordination of work load distribution, staff reassignment; and feedback regarding expected outcomes and performance. Monitors and maintains performance improvement results. Ensures all staff exhibit STAR service behaviors consistently.


Responsibilities

Supervises assigned staff and daily operations of area(s) and evaluates performance.

Coordinates and delegates daily work assignments. Monitors work flow and makes alterations as needed.

Serves as contact and liaison with other VCUHS Departments.

Identifies and implements process change to improve patient services and staff productivity.

Issues that involve violation of VCUHS policies and procedures, involve conflicts of a sensitive nature or that would be considered unusual in nature are to be brought to the attention of a higher level supervisor as would be warranted by the immediacy of the issue.

Hires and trains/mentors assigned staff. Approves/denies leave requests. Supervises 12+ FTEs and evaluates performance. Participates in disciplinary actions.

May be required to manage/oversee other areas in the absence of the Manager.

Keeps employees abreast of priorities, activities and procedural/policies changes.

Implements, enhances and monitors on-going initiatives designed to reduce errors and improve patient services.

Analyzes policies, procedures and work flow/processes and makes appropriate recommendations for changes.

Depending on area of assignment, must be flexible to work off-shifts and weekends as needed based on operational needs.

Qualifications

Required

Associates Degree in Business, Accounting or closely related field from an accredited program

Minimum of one (1) year of previous lead or supervisory work experience

Minimum of three (3) years of previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting (acute care hospital, physician office, medical practice, etc.)

Experience with medical terminology, medical insurance, HMO, managed care, GE/IDX, computerized order entry, appointment scheduling and medical coding requirements

Previous experience with Microsoft Office applications (at the intermediate level) and e-mail/calendaring

Preferred

Completion of medical terminology and/or other healthcare related courses

Bachelors Degree in Business, Accounting or closely related field from an accredited program

Two (2) or more years of previous supervisory/management experience

Four or more years of previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting (e.g. academic medical center, doctor's office, medical practice, etc.)
