Unmanned Aerial Systems Police Intern II: This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The goal is to expose the intern to as many law enforcement unmanned aerial systems experiences as possible. Observations are limited to the sections of Unmanned Aerials Systems Team, Metro Aviation Unit, Patrol, Special Operations Group, Traffic Safety, and Henrico County GIS. Note: We can work with selected student who may also need academic credit for their program that may be either required for graduation or allowed as an elective. We are seeking current college (rising junior or rising senior) pursuing a degree in a field relevant to the internship position.

Essential Duties
Unmanned Aerial Systems Police Intern II: This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025.
The goal is to expose the intern to as many law enforcement unmanned aerial systems experiences as possible. Observations are limited to the sections of Unmanned Aerials Systems Team, Metro Aviation Unit, Patrol, Special Operations Group, Traffic Safety, and Henrico County GIS.
Desired Area of Study: Unmanned and Autonomous Systems, Aeronautical Science or Engineering, Criminal Justice, Emergency Services, Geographic Information Systems
Desired GPA: 2.50 or better
Desired Student: College rising junior or rising senior
Start Date: May 16, 2025
End Date: By the start of the fall 2025 semester
Work Hours: M-F up to 29 hours, between the hours of 8 am – 4:30 pm are core but selected student must have the flexibility to work outside these hours for special events and tactical operations that can occur during early morning and weekends.
Work Location: Police Division Headquarters West Station, 7721 E. Parham Rd, Henrico, VA 23294 with travel to various locations as assigned.
Internship Status: Paid, $16.00 per hour Note: We can work with selected student who may also need academic credit for their program that may be either required for graduation or allowed as an elective.
The intern will be assigned to assist or perform duties that could include:
- Operate sUAS to support law enforcement operations and special events
- Conduct aerial photography and mapping
- Maintain the Police Division’s unmanned aerial system, command post, and equipment
- Complete flight logs and airspace waivers
- Other duties as assigned
- A written assignment shall be submitted to the Personnel Unit following completion of the internship (if one is required by school). This could consist of a copy of the final paper due to your school. A fifteen-minute presentation will be conducted at the conclusion of the internship.
The Selected student will need:
- Federal Aviation Administration, 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
- Valid Virginia Driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle.
- Ability to:
- lift to 50 pounds independently
- Walk through brush, heavily wooded areas, and on uneven terrain
- Stand for several hours at a time
- Work primarily outside in all weather conditions
- Experience with:
- DJI M350, M30T, Avata 2, and Mavic sUAS
- At least one year or 50 hours of sUAS flight
- Aerial mapping collection and post processing
- Pix4D Mapper or similar photogrammetry
- DroneSense experience
- Airborne thermography
- GIS and ESRI
- Strong foundational knowledge in a field relative to the internship
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship.
- Excellent organizational and research skills with the ability to organize facts/tasks effectively
- Attention to detail; able to meet deadlines.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Should demonstrate proficiency in the use of personal computers and common software products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Through the course of the Internship the student will gain:- Guidance and mentorship
- Inclusion in the daily operations of the unit.
- Knowledge of how the different units operate with one another throughout their course of duties.
- Exposure to the Police Division and the many professional and civilian career possibilities that exist.
- Broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge.
Internships are intended to complement the student’s academic program so the intern must have foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in this specific program. The intern will be working in a fast-paced environment while receiving professional training, clear direction, and expectations from field professionals. The intern will learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leadership, internal and external stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA: Good Academic standing; prefer a college student in the junior or senior year of the relevant degree program;
Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience;
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.

4. Unofficial school transcript, with GPA
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment (including an intern), including a conditional offer of initial employment or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
Students shall be of good standing in the community and shall successfully pass the background phase of the application process. This shall consist of but is not limited to DMV history and criminal history. Students shall meet and maintain those standards that are representative of the Division of Police.
All internship positions are limited to work up to 29 hours per week.
Interns are not entitled to a permanent position at the completion of an internship. The internship is designed to benefit the intern with knowledge and skills gained through experiences provided during the course of the internship.
