General Statement of Duties

Hiring bus drivers for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year and the 2024-2025 school year! The employee in this classification safely transports students to and from school and school related activities using a school bus during the regular school year and during the summer months.


186 and 219 day contracts are available for 6 or 7 hours. The minimum wage and salary for each contract is listed below. The salaries listed below will be prorated based on the official start date. Posting is open until filled.

6/186 @ $22.98 = $25,640.25

7/186 @ $22.98 = $29,913.62

6/219 @ $22.98 = $30,189.32

7/219 @ $22.98 = $35,220.87

Essential Duties

  • Conducts a daily pre-trip inspection on their assigned vehicle prior to transporting students
  • Operates school bus in a safe manner
  • Enforces all school bus safety rules and ensures passenger safety
  • Conducts bus evaluation drills as required by the State Department of Education
  • Reasonable disciplinary functions applied with fairness and consistency
  • Accurately completes required forms and reports in a timely manner
  • Ensures that the school bus and all installed safety equipment is functioning properly at all times
  • Reports mechanical defects to the appropriate maintenance staff
  • Ensures that the interior of the bus is clean at all times
  • Adheres to the annual vehicle inspection schedule
  • Follows designated route sheet and stops only at authorized stop locations
  • Conducts post-trip inspection of the bus after each bus run
  • Demonstrates good personal hygiene and conduct
  • Attends work daily and is actively engaged in assigned job responsibilities
  • Performs related work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Obtains and maintains Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements to operate a school bus in the State of Virginia.
  • Successfully completes State of Virginia, Department of Education Certification Course to drive a School Bus.
  • Knowledge of operation and function of a school bus and governing laws.
  • Ability to read and properly complete forms required by Pupil Transportation.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and adults.
  • Ability to read a map.
  • Must have 0 to +5 points on driving record.
  • Must be of good health and drug-free.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.

Sections 3, 4, 7 and 9 should be reviewed due to questions that may appear within the General Knowledge test.

When prepared, you must go to the Division of Motor Vehicles to take the following written tests to obtain the Commercial Driver's License Instructional Permit:

4. School Bus
