Position Title: Special Education Teacher (General Curriculum)

Contract Work Year: 190 Days Based of Certification & Years of Experience

Hours: 8 hours

Reports to: Building Principal

Purpose

The role of the Special Education Teacher is to provide direct special education services to students eligible for services under IDEA and GaDOE. The teacher provides support to students, teachers, and parents and acts as a liaison with community services. The teacher follows all federal, state, and district due process policies and procedures while supporting school administrators and other special educators and related service providers in compliant practices.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Three years of successful teaching experience as a general education or special education teacher.
  • Valid GAPSC license with special education certification or endorsements:
    • Clearance Certificate
    • Required Certification: Special Ed General Curriculum (P-12) Consultative [FLD 798]
    • Preferred Certifications: Elementary Education (P-5) – [FLD 808] or a Middle Grades or 6-12 Content Area
  • Exhibit positive interpersonal skills necessary to deal with diverse publics and colleagues.
  • Meet the needs of stakeholders tactfully and courteously.
  • Listens, understands, and follows directions.
  • Punctual and exceptional attendance.
  • Use of good judgment while recognizing the scope of authority.
  • Able to work independently, yet collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to lead teams in decision-making.
  • Exceptional understanding of IDEA policies, procedures, and services.
  • Able to interpret written materials.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally (face-to-face, phone, email, writing, etc.).
  • Professional writing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficient filing, record-keeping, and computer skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties of this position are noted below. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides specially designed instruction based on high-leverage and evidence-based practices to students instructed and assessed on general curriculum
  • Directs the activities of the ESS Paraprofessional to support IEP goal mastery and each student’s access to grade level standards to support progress
  • Maintain student confidentiality and monitor confidential files for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain open and ongoing communication with the families, colleagues, IEP team members, and department staff.
  • Encourages social skills and participation with disabled and non-disabled peers.
  • Attends in-person staff meetings, teacher training workshops and educational conferences to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Complies with all requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse, illegal harassment, breaches of ethics, or any criminal activity of which the employee becomes aware.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents pertaining to special education eligibility, provision of services, and progress monitoring
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy especially those as related to IDEA including timelines, procedures, and guidelines
  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with federal and state regulations regarding Special Education.
  • Facilitate IEP Meetings with multi-disciplinary providers to inform educational planning, services, supports, and accommodations for students with significant cognitive disabilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator
