General Statement of Duties

This position requires knowledge and skills in the instruction of reading and writing to provide foundational literacy instruction for high school students. The reading intervention teacher will collaborate with teachers, department chairs, and administrators to make data based instructional decisions. The reading intervention teacher’s responsibilities include lesson planning and daily instruction of students using interventions based on the Science of Reading. Candidates must possess the ability to plan, organize, and provide instruction that impacts student achievement.

Successful candidates should:

  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of reading instruction including decoding, composing, and comprehension and its impact on content area literacy at the secondary level.
  • Possess knowledge of literacy assessments and the ability to use assessment data to create instructional goals for students receiving intervention.
  • Work collaboratively with team members.
  • Previous reading teacher experience is preferred.


Essential Duties

The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Professional Expectations:

  • Balance a class load and school-wide literacy support.
  • Assess students’ literacy needs.
  • Analyze student data to make instructional decisions.
  • Monitor students’ progress and use of digital tools related to intervention.
  • Provide daily instruction to small groups of students in the English classroom
  • Co-teach or model specific literacy strategies with teachers in other content areas
  • Observe literacy lessons and provide feedback to teachers to improve literacy instruction
  • Complete reports, collect data, and provide information for program monitoring as requested.
  • Co-teach or model specific literacy strategies with teachers in other content areas
  • Plan and organize school-wide tutoring program
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning.
  • Collaborate with teachers to support school-wide reading programs and content teams across disciplines
  • Incorporate and model appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Virginia or U.S. out-of-state teaching license in the above-mentioned curriculum is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience is required.
  • Master’s Degree in Reading is preferred.
  • Previous reading teacher experience is preferred.

Additional Information

This posting is for the 2024-25 SY with an August 12, 2024, contractual start date. Annual compensation will be prorated to the official start date.

Minimum annual starting salary:

    • $55,897.48 (Bachelors)
    • $58,580.71 (Masters)
