General Statement of Duties
The speech/language pathologist functions as a member of the student's educational team and is responsible for the development of effective communication skills in those students identified as speech/language impaired. This position requires expertise in the diagnosis and remediation of communication disorders, provision of therapy for students with a wide range of disabilities, ongoing data collection and maintenance of Documentation of Service Logs and the ability to work with computers, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology. Additionally, consultation with general educators is required.
In addition to providing speech services, the Lead Speech Pathologist oversees speech services for students with disabilities. Communicates within and outside of the school system; requires handling of sensitive information and/or dealing tactfully with others.
Essential Duties
- Assesses communication disorders including test selection, administration, interpretation and formal report writing.
- Implements the entire referral process to determine a student's eligibility for special education services within federal state/county procedural guidelines
- Provides speech/language therapy in accordance with a written educational plan for students with a wide range of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive impairments
- Develops therapeutic plans for intervention within a range of therapy service models and as a member of an inter/transdisciplinary team(s)
- Communicates orally and in writing with parents, school personnel, and outside agency professionals
- Develops action plans for students not formally identified as speech/language impaired
- Participates in district special education leadership meetings as scheduled and follow-through with district decisions and recommendations at the school level
- Conducts monthly school-based department meetings at the school level
- Adheres to federal and state annual IEP and reevaluation timelines, law and regulations related to special education
- Provides case management for students in private day placements
- Monitors the implementation of district special education curriculum at the school level
- Assigns teacher caseloads
- Develops schedules for instructional assistant to support students and school programming
- Collaborates with school counselors, administrators and related service provides to ensure the master schedule meets identified student needs
- Assists with planning, coordinating and conducting professional learning with respect to specially designed instruction and student services.
- Provides peer coaching and modeling to assist other teachers in maximizing instructional effectiveness
- Mentors new speech pathologists
- Maintains proper inventory of supplies, evaluation kits, textbooks, equipment and instructional resources.
- Participates as a member of the school based school quality team
- 11 Month Contract supports instruction during summer Extended School Year
- Other duties as assigned
- Regular attendance is required
Minimum Qualifications
Must hold a valid license as a Speech Language Pathologist issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Extensive school based experience, including expertise with IEP processes and special education regulatory guidance and standards as defined by the VA Department of Education guidelines. Must be comfortable leading meetings and training/professional development with external partners, internal management and/or other stakeholders. Must have good verbal and written communication and organizational skills. Five years of experience in a school setting and prior leadership experience are preferred.
Additional Information
The minimum salary for this 299-day position is $66,989 with a master's or $78,936 with ASHA CCCs. The annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date.
