Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The Occupational and Environmental Safety Office (OESO) provides the focus for the administration of all safety and environmental programs to Duke University, Duke University Medical Center, and Duke University Health System. OESO has the responsibility for developing institutional safety and environmental plans and policies; providing information and training to meet all regulatory requirements; providing technical consultation and guidance; conducting exposure and risk assessments; conducting safety and environmental audits; monitoring compliance with all safety and environmental policies; and investigating accidents, injuries, spills, environmental releases, and reported unsafe conditions.

Specific to the Community Hospital and Clinic Safety Division: The Community Hospital and Clinic Safety Division is responsible for developing, organizing, directing, and monitoring activities that minimize occupational health and safety risks and assure compliance with applicable regulations and accreditation bodies for Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, and associated clinics. The Division accomplishes these objectives through the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of safety and health hazards and through coordination with the other specialized Divisions within OESO.

Primary Purpose of Position: This position is responsible for the oversight of technical projects supporting safety and health programs at Duke. These individuals will work with Duke departments to minimize occupational health and safety risks and to manage compliance with applicable regulations. This position reports directly to the Director of the Community Hospital and Clinic Safety Division of the OESO.

General Duties and Responsibilities: In addition to the primary duties, the Safety Associate will:

  • Perform detailed and modestly complex quantitative and qualitative analyses such as calculations, field sampling and monitoring, testing and measuring under general supervision.
  • Monitor hazardous materials levels in the environment and internal workplace to determine potential hazards using the appropriate instruments. Perform safety and health surveys and determines effectiveness of any corrective measure taken to ensure compliance with safety and health regulations.
  • Maintain records pertinent to special sampling projects performed in conjunction with safety and health projects.
  • May recommend appropriate personnel monitoring devices, protective equipment and working time for employees working with hazardous materials.
  • Assist in installation and set-up of complex instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain periodic inspections of equipment and performs preventative maintenance work.
  • Maintain updated related knowledge of technical and legislative developments and requirements.
  • Maintain various safety databases and supply necessary reports.
  • May provide training and guidance to less experienced technicians.
  • Conduct safety classes for employees and students.
  • Participate in determining fiscal budget requirements for safety systems programs.
  • Provide technical support activities in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership to Duke departments and personnel.
  • Serve as a member of the OESO spill response team.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to utilize computer technology to develop and access data, maintain records and generate reports.
  • Good oral/written communication skills.
  • Creative problem solving to recognize and correct fire detection/suppression problems.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate work schedules.
  • Possess strong working knowledge of the federal, state and local regulations.
  • Must be able to work away from the office with general supervision.

Education:

Associate degree

Experience:

Four years practical experience working in safety and health programs.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have completed or be able to complete First Responder-Operations Level Training (29 CFR 1910.120).
