Summary

The level 14 Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications for the Office of Undergraduate Education Division of Experiential Education (OUE-EE) is responsible for planning and executing a comprehensive, strategic communications plan including web, print, video, and digital media channels for OUE-EE units offering and supporting both on- and off-campus, curricular and co-curricular activities and programs. OUE-EE is home to the Global Education Office (GEO), Duke Immerse, the Rubenstein Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program (ACE), Duke Summer Experiences (DSE), and the Office of Global Health and Safety (OGHS). This position reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education – Experiential Education and works closely with the leadership and staff of all divisional staff to ensure appropriate and integrated communications practices are deployed to advance departmental goals and objectives.

Work Performed:

Communications Leadership – 45%


  • Plan and implement communications campaigns related to changes in OUE-EE and unit policies, procedures, recruitment needs, and special events and projects.
  • Establish divisional and unit-specific style guides and provide oversight of graphic and editorial standards based on Duke style guides, OUE anti-racism communications guidelines, and industry best practices.
  • Oversee OUE-EE and unit-specific content editors to ensure consistency and accuracy across published materials.
  • Provide leadership as chief website editor of OUE-EE websites, overseeing the work of website editing teams within EE units. Plan and document workflows for cyclical, sitewide batch edits related to dates, costs, policy changes, and application requirements. Serve as project lead for website updates and redesigns as needed.
  • Serve as liaison and main point of contact with external vendors and Duke OIT teams conducting back-end development and maintenance of OUE-EE websites.
  • Develop and maintain professional contacts with OUE and other Provost-area communicators, University Communications, and other offices and academic departments that have major intersections with OUE-EE units.
  • Manage the OUE-EE marketing and communications budgets.
  • Evaluate the usage, reach, and effectiveness of communications efforts and use this assessment to inform future content development efforts.
  • Advise on and assist with matters of crisis communications in close partnership with OUE-EE and Duke crisis management leaders.

Content Production – 35%


  • Conduct interviews, research, and write articles and feature stories to publicize and promote OUE-EE initiatives, activities, and programs.
  • Capture undergraduate student testimonials, student-authored blog posts, and photos to illustrate immersive, civic engagement, and study away experiences.
  • Develop and implement social media strategy. Stay abreast of changes in social media and make recommendations. Provide guidance and training resources for students, faculty, and staff managing social media channels in OUE-EE units and programs.
  • Draft copy and lead copy editing efforts for internal resources – handbooks, requests for proposals, bulletins, and program wikis.
  • Lead the production of video content to promote OUE-EE and unit initiatives and solve communication challenges.
  • Write and design communication materials including newsletters, presentations, and blog posts intended for academic advisors, university administrators, and campus partners.
  • Design and administer program-specific recruiting resources (e.g., digital flyers, postcards, ads, testimonials, swag) to support individual programs. Maintain a regular cycle for reviewing and updating materials and managing inventories.

Event Promotion & Support – 20%


  • Working with unit leaders, facilitate OUE-EE and unit-specific participation in opportunities that raise visibility for programs and activities administered by divisional units, including fairs, panels, tabling events, event sponsorships, etc.
  • Coordinate preparation of promotional items, handouts, and presentation slides for major meetings and events.
    Qualifications:

Education: Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience: Work requires 2 to 3 years of experience in marketing, advertising, media, promotions, graphic arts, public relations, sales, or other related background to acquire skills necessary to plan, develop, and implement marketing strategies for multiple programs and entities. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
