Berkshire School seeks a School Counselor to begin in August 2024. Working collaboratively with the Counseling Office, this full-time, ten-month position will help support the approximately 430 students at Berkshire School. In addition to providing direct support and interventions for students, they will advise school leaders regarding school-wide practices and work with faculty members and families to ensure student health and learning.

Salary is competitive and includes meals when school is in session. Health and retirement benefits, including TIAA-CREF, are part of the compensation package. Funding exists to support advanced degree work and student loan repayment, as well as participation in professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel.

Successful candidates for this position will:

  • Have five or more years of relevant experience providing counseling and therapeutic support services to adolescents, ideally within an independent school setting.
  • Partner with student families and outside health providers to provide effective and collaborative emotional, psychological, and social support.
  • Act as a resource for administrators, faculty and staff, developing action plans for students needing support, and broadly assisting the faculty's efforts through regular consultation and training to best serve Berkshire students.
  • Execute student risk assessments based on best professional practices.
  • Develop strong relationships with external health professionals to ensure that Berkshire students are connected with external resources and timely referrals when needed or appropriate.
  • Serve on-call in a weekend and evening rotation with the members of the Counseling Office.
  • Promote student well being; provide preventative services; and respond to student emotional, psychological, academic, and social needs.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small cohort of students and participate in one season of the Afternoon

Program Qualifications:

  • We will consider psychologists, mental health counselors, and clinical social workers.
  • Potential candidates should have earned a Master's Degree or PsyD/Ph.D. in psychology, social work, school counseling, or a related field.
  • Potential candidates should hold a Massachusetts state license in their field or be license eligible.
  • Experience and expertise working with upper school students both individually and in groups is required.
  • All clinical theoretical orientations are welcome, but a working knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is desirable.
