General Statement of Duties

This vacancy is open until filled. Maintains a Journeyman or Master certification in one of the regulated trades thru the Virginia DPOR; proficiently performs duties as assigned in the primary trade and has a strong working knowledge of a second trade such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, backflow testing and prevention, gas fitting, pipe insulating and boiler inspection and maintenance. Makes repairs and performs preventative maintenance on all HCPS facilities; does related work as required.

Essential Duties

· Performs work in a primary trade at the journeyman or master level and maintains a sound working knowledge and skills in a second recognized trade;

· Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of current industry standards and best practices in two trades;

· Wires buildings and makes additions to existing wiring;

· Installs and repairs fluorescent, industrial and general lighting fixtures and connections;

· Installs and maintains remote control devices for magnetic motor connections;

· Installs and replaces existing electrical panels, services, transformers, etc.

· Installs and maintains all types of HVAC and temperature control systems; i.e. boilers, heat pumps, air handlers;

· Checks various high and low pressure units and systems for correct operating pressures and possible leaks;

· Checks all systems for leaks, faulty control mechanisms and adjusts or replaces such mechanisms as necessary;

· Determines proper balance of air in fan systems and liquid flow through heating systems;

· Makes regular scheduled inspection of all heating systems and checks stack temperature, draft and amount of C02 in flue gas to determine efficiency of operation;

· Performs overtime work on scheduled, unscheduled, routine or emergency basis as assigned;

· Install, maintain and repair domestic water systems;

· Install sinks, urinals, toilets and other plumbing fixtures;

· Install, maintain and repair domestic sanitary and storm water systems;

· Respond to stoppages and leaks and make repairs;

· Service, repair and replace water heaters;

· Install, maintain and repair outside irrigation systems;

· Install, maintain and repair interior fire sprinkler systems; both dry and wet pipe;

· Install, maintain and repair natural gas and L.P. gas systems, lines and equipment;

· Maintains, repairs and services boilers and heating systems;

· Checks various high and low pressure units and systems for correct operating pressures and repairs any leaks found;

· Determines proper balance of air in fan systems and liquid flow through heating systems;

· Performs regular scheduled inspection of all heating systems and checks stack temperature, draft and amount of CO2 in flue gas to determine efficiency of operation;

· Maintains continuing education as required for State certification;

· Required to be available for emergency calls on a stand-by basis;

· Self-auditing practices in safety awareness and procedures;

· Participates in all scheduled meetings and trainings;

· Completes work orders at site and in the current work order system accurately, timely and cost effectively with minimal oversight from supervisor, with unusual situations referred to supervisor;

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Certification as a journeyman or master in one of the regulated trades thru the Virginia DPOR; proficient working knowledge in one of the trades with strong working knowledge of a second trade such as electrical, HVAC heating and cooling, plumbing, backflow testing and prevention, gas fitting, pipe insulating and boiler inspection and maintenance; good working knowledge of other basic trades; good working knowledge of a wide variety of hand and power tools; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; sound working knowledge of building systems; ability to estimate time and materials needed; good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; good computer skills with ability to use computer; requires the ability to read, interpret and adhere to complex instructions; requires the ability to create and maintain records; physical condition that will permit heavy lifting, loading, unloading, pushing, reaching, stooping, climbing ladders and working under adverse temperature and/or weather conditions; personal accountability including teamwork and establishing and maintaining positive relationships with HCPS employees; ability to work independently and with a team to complete assigned tasks safely and on time; excellent customer service skills; tact; and courtesy. Must be able to appropriately represent HCPS in all interactions with the schools and public. Requires a safe driving record with the ability to safely operate County-owned equipment and vehicles. May require the ability to work a flexible schedule and work ‘on-call’ hours for the Department.


Education: Graduation from high school/GED or trade school; preferably with coursework in one or more of the recognized skilled trades. Considerable knowledge of the common practices, materials, tools, and terminology of the trade.

Experience: Four (4) or more years of relevant work experience

OR: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Additional Requirements:

· CFC card required for HVAC trades

· Ability to cover ‘on-call’ time in rotation of primary trade group

· Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

· Ability to independently lift 50 pounds and climb a ladder; good physical condition required.


Additional Information

Salary range $45,599.38 - $50,082.22 - minimum 14.87 per hour; 260 day (12 months) 8 hour per day - summer work hours - M-TH 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
