Occupational Summary

Assist in the evaluation and analysis of Engineering and Operations networking needs and provide for integration of multiple hardware and operating system platforms; install, provide configuration management for and troubleshoot local area networks; provide assistance to user departments; assist in the establishment of university-wide network standards and training programs.

Work Performed

  • Assist in the evaluation and analysis of Engineering and Operations networking needs and provide for integration of multiple hardware and operating system platforms within a large, complex university local area network system.
  • Support 150 departmental users and 219 systems. Serve as technology liaison. Provide assistance to departmental local area network coordinators and users.
  • Install, provide configuration management for and troubleshoot local area network computer software and hardware; install and upgrade network operating system and network-based applications. Maintenance and repair of 124 desktop computers, 69 notebook computers and 26 PC file servers.
  • Provide for network security and backup and restoration of user files; monitor network performance. Participate in the establishment of university-wide hardware and software standards for networking and in the planning, expansion and growth of university local area networks.
  • Maintain liaison with DHTS representatives or other university data processing operations, professional organizations and equipment manufacturers to ensure utilization of current principles and techniques.

29 File Servers

• Perform daily backup of each file server

• Maintain security patches and current updates

• Configure new users and all security rights

• On call 24 x 7 for all server problems

175 Computer Workstations

• Maintain software, security, user files and peripherals

• Replace 15-20 systems per year as funds are available

• Perform helpdesk support

Printers

• Maintain and repair of 62 printers

• Responsible for print drivers and all printer issues

Database Management for 9 Databases

• Maintenance and database management

• Daily backup and periodic testing of those backups

Application Support

• Support all normal office applications

• Work with multiple vendors on Duke applications

• Work with DHTS on all email issues

Miscellaneous

• Configure and maintain (24 x 7) 36 Building Automation panels

• Performs all ISSA for Duke Engineering and Operations

• Consult on all BAS (Building Automations Systems) projects

• Responsible for all recommending and/or ordering of hardware and software

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or computer-related field, or equivalent coursework or technical training.

Experience:

Work requires one to two years of local area network management, programming experience or analytical experience with knowledge of several computer languages, programs or systems.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a computer related field, or equivalent course work or technical training.

Experience

Work requires one year of local area network management, programming OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE experience or analytical experience with knowledge of several computer languages, programs or systems.
