Work Performed

We are looking for creative, highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to join our group.

The laboratory offers a rich training environment to expand one’s knowledge of basal ganglia disease mechanisms, diverse technical methodologies, and issues surrounding targeted therapeutic development. Current project teams employ synaptic physiology, in vivo chemicogenetic circuit manipulations, behavioral phenotyping, 2PLSM calcium imaging of direct and indirect pathway activity in the striatum, and genome-wide RNAi and small molecule high-throughput screening to discovery novel therapies for basal ganglia disorders.

The ideal candidate should have a strong desire and capability to lead an inquiry of their design that complements our areas of interest. Current interests are (1) the role of metabotropic glutamate receptor and/or integrated stress response signaling in shaping synaptic activity, local striatal microcircuitry, and striatal-dependent behaviors and (2) synaptic and circuit mechanisms for habit, compulsion, dystonia and Parkinson’s.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in neuroscience or complementary field, demonstrated productivity, outstanding letters of reference and be able to communicate goals for this training phase of their career. International applicants proficient in oral and written English are welcome to apply.

The fellow will benefit from the outstanding training environment the Duke neuroscience community offers. Our laboratory is situated at the center of the neuroscience community at Duke, in the Bryan Research Building. The neuroscience community at Duke is dynamic and highly collaborative and affords easy access to cutting edge, innovative technologies. There are also numerous opportunities to launch creative, new research directions through internal grant mechanisms, such as those supported by the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences (http://www.dibs.duke.edu/) and an NIH training grant (T32) .

Collegiality is fostered through interactions at weekly journal clubs and seminar series and an offsite annual retreat held by the department of Neurobiology. The fellow can also expect to be mentored in all aspects of career development including oral presentations and grant writing.

Education requirements:

Min Degree Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g. Sc.D., M.D., D.V.M.). Should be used for post-doctoral fellows if the candidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree, but the degree has not been formally conferred; the candidate may present evidence of completion of the degree requirements, together with a statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be conferred.
