Job Summary:
The Maintenance Shop Foreman for Rome City School Transportation department is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the maintenance shop, ensuring the efficient and effective maintenance and repair of the school district's fleet of buses and other transportation vehicles. This role involves supervising a team of maintenance technicians, scheduling work, managing inventory, and maintaining a safe and productive work environment. The Foreman will also be responsible for hands-on maintenance and repair work as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate's degree in a related field preferred.
- Proven experience as a maintenance technician, with a strong understanding of various maintenance disciplines (e.g., diesel engines, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic), preferably with experience working on buses or heavy-duty vehicles.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a team effectively.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, especially in time-sensitive situations.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations and procedures, including DOT regulations related to school buses.
- Experience with inventory management and control, preferably using a CMMS.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including experience with maintenance management software (CMMS).
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements preferred, but may be required. The district may assist in obtaining the CDL.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities:
- Supervision and Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor a team of maintenance technicians, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
- Assign work orders and prioritize tasks based on urgency, vehicle availability, and resource availability, considering school schedules and transportation needs.
- Conduct regular team meetings to communicate updates, address concerns, and foster a positive work environment.
- Evaluate employee performance and recommend appropriate personnel actions.
- Resolve conflicts and address employee issues promptly and professionally.
- Maintenance Operations:
- Oversee the execution of preventative maintenance schedules and ensure timely completion, minimizing vehicle downtime and maximizing availability for school routes.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions in buses and other vehicles.
- Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are performed according to established procedures, DOT regulations, and safety standards.
- Manage and track work orders, ensuring accurate documentation of all maintenance activities using a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) or similar system.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities for improvement, including preventative maintenance strategies and cost-saving measures.
- Develop and implement maintenance procedures and best practices specific to school transportation vehicles and equipment.
- Inventory Management:
- Manage inventory of parts, supplies, and tools, ensuring adequate stock levels while minimizing waste and optimizing budget.
- Order and receive parts and supplies, verifying accuracy and quality, and managing vendor relationships.
- Implement and maintain an inventory control system.
- Conduct regular inventory audits.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce all safety regulations and procedures within the maintenance shop, ensuring a safe working environment for all staff.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and identify potential hazards.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained in safe operating condition and meets DOT and state regulations.
- Promote a culture of safety consciousness among team members.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations.
- Budget Management:
- Assist in the development of the maintenance budget, focusing on cost-effective maintenance strategies and efficient resource allocation.
- Monitor expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Track and report on maintenance costs, providing data-driven insights to management.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with the Transportation Director, school administrators, and other departments regarding maintenance schedules, vehicle availability, and any potential disruptions to transportation services.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of parts and services.
- Provide regular updates to management on maintenance activities, shop performance, and budget status.
- Hands-on Maintenance:
- Perform maintenance and repair tasks as needed, including troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on various equipment and systems. This includes a working foreman component, leading by example and assisting the team.
