South Campus Evening SOEI Coach

FTE: 0.4 FTE

Commitment Duration: Minimum of 3 years

Reports to: Instructional Supervisor

Hours/Location: Work based specifically in the evenings at South Campus. Coaches will be required to attend monthly daytime and evening PD events throughout the school year. Overall schedule will remain flexible and can be negotiated with supervisor.

Summary: Assist new and experienced AE teachers in developing and improving teaching skills outlined in the Standards of Effective Instruction (SOEI) rubric. Fuel MPS AE’s focus on collaborative learning through coordination and planning of professional development events and Professional Learning Communities (PLC). Coaches will provide leadership, guidance and coaching to build teachers’ instructional strategies.

Responsibilities:

  1. Observe 1-2 classes per week using the MPS teacher evaluation model (focused observation template) and the SOEI rubric.

    • Strategy 1.1: Conduct a pre-observation conference meeting, observation, and post-observation meeting.

    • Strategy 1.2: Collaboratively set goals with teachers and identify “next steps” actions. Act as a resource and support teachers in carrying out next steps.

  2. Coach individual teachers in achieving proficiency in all elements of SOEI rubric.

    • Strategy 2.1: Develop and share with teachers during evaluation process, and upon request, a “toolbox” of resources to use in coaching teachers on specific SOEI elements based on data from teacher evaluations. Sample areas would be increasing learner cognitive engagement, lesson planning and scaffolding learning, differentiation, classroom/behavior management, and data collection and use.

    • Strategy 2.2: Model teaching strategies in own class while other teachers observe.

  3. Coordinate program PLC’s by supporting team chairs to lead PLCs, aligning PLC work with SOEI and Professional Development.

    • Strategy 3.1: Develop a plan for PLC meetings that directs teams to focus on specific SOEI elements and strategies to improve student learning.

    • Strategy 3.2: Plan and lead monthly PLC chair meetings to assist chairs in leading PLC meeting that focus on SOEI and student learning.

  4. Plan, Coordinate and lead monthly PD sessions including three all-staff professional development events related to specific SOEI elements that are determined to be high priority based on teacher evaluation data.

    • Strategy 4.1: Work with MPS Teacher Evaluation staff to identify specific focus areas.

    • Strategy 4.2: Identify presenters, develop agenda, and coordinate logistics of professional development events.

Qualifications:

  • SOEI Coach should be willing to make a 3-5 year commitment to the position and must have at least 3 years experience in teaching adults. Master’s Degree in education preferred but not required. Experience leading and planning professional development initiatives preferred, but not required.

  • SOEI Coaches will need to successfully complete the Observer Certification process by the end of Trimester 1 of the school year. Coaches will be required to participate in Cognitive Coaching as well as ENVoY training by the end of Trimester 2 of the school year. Coaches will co-observe with supervisor and other experienced coaches beginning Trimester 1, and will gradually assume responsibility for focused observation by the beginning of Trimester 2 of the school year.
