In Milwaukee Public Schools the primary role of a School Nurse is to provide case management and nursing care for students with special care needs in the school setting, as prescribed by a physician. The delivered care has been requested by the parents and is outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university
- An Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) will be accepted with the following requirement:
- Registered Nurses with an Associate's Degree in Nursing-must complete a 3-credit course in community or public health nursing from a baccalaureate accredited nursing program to meet the requirement for "School Nurse" position
- Proof of course completion and certification by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) that the course qualifies candidate to become a "School Nurse" is required. For Non-BSN applicants, a copy of the DPI School Nurse Certificate showing satisfactory completion of coursework in public health/community health is required
- Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Wisconsin
- Must be CPR certified
- Must hold a valid Wisconsin Drivers License at the time of appointment (and throughout employment) and availability of a properly insured personal automobile for use on the job (car allowance provided)
- One year hands on experience providing nursing care to children is preferred

Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides direct nursing care of health and illness needs of individuals during the school day ensuring adherence to Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) policies and procedures. Provides emergency nursing services as necessary.
- Maintains records of services provided to students, following appropriate confidentiality guidelines.
- Assesses, upon referrals from case managers, the health care needs of children and the resulting barriers to education. Determines health care as a related service of students.
- Constructs the health component of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP), after analysis and synthesis of medical and health data.
- Provides consultation to the School Nurse Associates (SNA) in the assessment, evaluation and management of student health.
- Provides counseling regarding health concerns to students and families. Assists students and families in obtaining appropriate health care services.
- Facilitates the continuity of health care of students by planning and exchanging information with other school districts, community health providers and social service agencies, ensuring that confidentiality guidelines are followed.
- Maintains current knowledge base on health care and nursing issues through attendance at seminars, conferences, and reading professional literature.
- Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan
- Performs other duties as assigned
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
The salary range for the Full-Time School Nurse position starts at $60,669.93 and increases according to a set salary schedule which is based on years' of work experience as a fully licensed RN with a Bachelors Science of Nursing degree (BSN) or equivalent as indicated under the qualifications.
This work schedule for this position is 10-months/200 work days during the school year.
