Victim Services Specialist Intern II - This is an internship for academic credit for the spring of 2025. The student will be assigned to the County of Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney's Office to support the Victim/Witness Assistance Program You must be a current student eligible to earn academic credit either as a requirement or an elective for your program to be eligible for this internship. Students will start between January 21-27, 2025 to align with the start of the semester (depending on the student's program requirements and school schedule).

Essential Duties

Victim Services Specialist Intern II: This is an internship for the spring of 2025. This internship is for academic credit for current undergraduate level students whose program either requires or allows the opportunity to earn academic credit for an internship. If you cannot earn academic credit, you are not eligible for this Internship.

Desired Area of Study: Criminal Justice, Social work (undergrad program only), Sociology, or Psychology

Desired GPA
: 2.50 or better

Work Hours
: Monday through Friday, flexible daytime hours within 8:30 am - 4:30 pm; Interns are allowed to work up to 29 hours per week based on their program guidelines and the intern's availability.

Work Location:
Henrico Western Government Center - 4301 E. Parham Road, Henrico, VA 23228

Expected Start Date:
Start between January 21 - 27, 2025 to align with the start of the semester (depending on the student's program requirements and school schedule). We also work with non-traditional start dates for schools whose semester may not align with this time.

Expected End Date:
at or by the end of the summer semester unless the student's program requires hours across more than one semester.

Internship Status:
This internship is unpaid, and the student will earn academic credit according to their program guidelines. The student must have the ability to earn academic credit either as a requirement or an elective for their program in order to be eligible for this internship.


The Victim/Witness Assistance Program (V/WAP) were established in Virginia in 1984 under §9-173.3 of the code of Virginia. We help ensure that the Henrico County victims and witnesses of crime receive fair and compassionate treatment while participating in the criminal justice system. We also, to the best of our ability, ensure they receive the rights entitled to them under the Virginia Crime Victims and Witness Rights Act.


The goals of our program are to reduce the psychological trauma associated with being a victim of a crime by helping the victim with emotional support, crisis counseling, advocacy, referrals to local social service agencies. Additionally, we can give information on the status of the case, status of the person arrested, the court system and their rights as a crime victim and address safety concerns. The legal process, frequently long and complicated, often fails to address the unique needs of victims. However, our V/WAP advocates are available to make sure that these needs are addressed.


The Intern duties may include:

  • Court-based observation and shadowing of current Victim Services Specialists.
  • Assisting victims and witnesses through the criminal justice system.
  • Assisting petitioners of protective orders through the civil protective order process.
  • Assisting or performing various clerical and office duties as needed.
  • Other projects as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship;
  • Excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively;
  • Excellent attention to details;
  • Excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Ability to multitask and manage priorities;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team;
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.

Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Pursuing a graduate (master's) or undergraduate degree in a field relevant to internship; GPA of 2.50 or better;

Experience: Enrolled in a college-level program in relevant degree program; relevant job, volunteer or previous internship experience;

Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the internship.

NOTE: Internships for academic credit are for current students only whose program allows or requires an internship for academic credit.
