General Statement of Duties

  • This is a 12 Month or 260-day School Counseling Department Director assignment.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide direct professional, educational, career and general developmental counseling services to high school students.
  • The successful candidate will be required to work closely with the school’s administration and leadership teams, and to provide daily leadership and management with regard to the school’s overall counselling program in accordance with district and state requirements.


Essential Duties


The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.


Professional Expectations:

  • Counsels students on personal problems, careers, peer relationships, and attendance problems
  • Conducts small and large group guidance sessions
  • Maintains and updates student cumulative folders
  • Communicates with parents and agency representatives concerning student problems
  • Designs and implements behavior modification programs for students
  • Coordinates teacher and parent conferences as needed
  • Interprets test data and student records for parents and teachers
  • Plays a major role in Child Study activities
  • Daily attendance
  • Engaged and on task
  • Performs other duties as required

Must have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum, instruction, and counseling/guidance theory and practice. Counseling skills must include problem identification/analysis skills and basic therapy resolution. Communication skills, both oral and written, must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of the clientele, professional staff, and other community agencies. Must be able to organize and carry out student activity programs; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicant must have a post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in secondary school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education.

Additional Information

This vacancy is for the 2024-25 school year with a July, 1, 2024 start date. Compensation subject to a 5% increase over the projected annual salary.

    • Minimum annual starting salary: $71,187.13 (Master Degree) or $74,604.32 (Doctorate Degree).
(*The compensation listed above is based on the current 2023-24 SY compensation rates and may be subject to any increases provided in the 2024-25 HCPS school board budget to be released in May.)
