General Statement of Duties

This vacancy is for the coming 2024-25 SY. Candidates with immediate availability are encouraged to apply.


The selected candidate will use and evaluate instructional materials and resources, including technology, that support the curriculum of Adult Education.


The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Plan, organize and deliver instruction to meet individual and group learning needs utilizing state guidelines and division curriculum.
  • Regularly exhibit knowledge in learning theory and best practices.
  • Consistently act in the best interests of students and model appropriate behavior in all professional interactions.

The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.


Essential Duties

  • Administering the TABE assessment to adults and interpreting the scores for appropriate class placement
  • Actively seeking out potential students within the educational setting
  • Primary duties include providing individual and group instruction to adult students in the area of ABE (adult basic education)
  • Candidate will work collaboratively with ESOL and Exceptional Education instructors to facilitate dual enrollment and transition to ABE courses as appropriate within the jail program
  • Setting goals and objectives with the adult students
  • Humanizes instruction by planning a program of study that meets the individual needs of students
  • Should possess computer skills; strong classroom management and organizational skills; have excellent oral and written communication skills; experience in working with adults and/or high school students is preferred
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of subject matter
  • Implements all curriculum programs adopted systemwide in a positive and efficient manner
  • Establishes clear objectives for all learning experiences and communicates these objectives to students
  • Makes use of a variety of resources, materials, and methods in an effort to improve the effectiveness of instruction
  • Speaks clearly using fluent and appropriate language in well-modulated tones
  • Takes all necessary precautions to protect and to maintain facilities, equipment, and materials
  • Emphasizes and enforces safety factors within the classroom, building, and throughout property
  • As an extension of classroom management responsibilities supervises students throughout the school as assigned, or as circumstances require
  • Maintains a disciplined atmosphere appropriate to the teaching environment
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with co-workers relative to school matters

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree and a valid Virginia teaching license required
  • Eligible VDOE license endorsements for this assignment include English, math, science, history, and/or special education.
  • An endorsement in adult education is preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain Henrico County Sherriff's Office security clearance.

$67,926.50 Bachelors,

$71,187.13 Masters *


The compensation listed above is based on the current 2023-24 SY compensation rates and may be subject to any increases provided in the 2024-25 HCPS school board budget to be released in May.)
