Fire Logistics/Administrative Intern II: The student will be assigned to work in our Support Services, Logistics section of the Division of Fire. The rate of pay is $16.00 per hour. Summer internships will start May 16, 2025 and end by the start of the fall semester.

Essential Duties

Fire Logistics/Administrative Intern II - This position is for a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The student will be assigned to work in our Support Services, Logistics Section for the Henrico County Division of Fire. The Support Services Section encompasses Logistics, Facilities, Fleet, Fire IT, and Department of Emergency Communications Liaison. This section supports every other section in the Division of Fire through their various job duties and responsibilities and is a vital function to daily and long-term operations for the Division of Fire.

Desired Area of Study: Business Administration or any program that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Desired GPA: 2.50 or better
Desired Student: College - rising junior or senior
Work Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday (may vary according to selected student's availability)
Work Location: 7701 E. Parham Road, Henrico, VA 23294
Expected Start Date: May 16, 2025.
Expected End Date: on or by the start of the fall 2025 semester.
Internship Status: This is a paid internship position at the hourly rate of $16.00/hour, up to 29 hours per week.

The intern may be a part of a variety of duties to shadow, perform or provide:

  • General office duties
  • Data Entry
  • Records Management System: updating, retrieving information, reports etc.
  • Filing
  • Research
  • Statistical calculations
  • Data Analysis
  • Data Collection
  • Scanning
  • Special projects
  • Other duties as assigned

The Desired Student should have:

  • Interest in:
    • Inventory management
    • Process or workflow development
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens are integral to the internship.
  • Familiar with programs such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to perform independently and follow directions is essential.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively.

Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of:

  • Daily operations of Support Services
  • Exposure of Fleet, Facilities, Fire Logistics, and Safety & Wellness sections of Fire.
  • Supporting the Mission of a Metro Sized Fire Department
  • Daily operations for the Division of Fire
  • Exposure to all sections and how support services fulfill its obligations to support them
  • Careers that exist within the Division of Fire and within local government

Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA of 2.50 or better; prefer a college rising junior or senior year of the relevant degree program.

Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience.

Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the internship.
