General Statement of Duties

Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Assists the Attorney for the Commonwealth in representing the people of the Commonwealth in criminal and traffic cases; does related work as required.

Essential Duties


Extensive knowledge of general and governmental law; good knowledge of State and County laws and federal laws and regulations and their relationship to the authority and functions of County and State; ability to organize, interpret and apply legal principles and knowledge to complex legal problems; ability to effectively prosecute a variety of cases; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials and the general public; good professional judgment; good legal research and writing skills.

Minimum Qualifications

For an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney I: Graduation from an accredited school of law; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Pay grade range is HP.32 $76,373 - $140,493- expected hiring range will be at the lower end of listed scale.)

For an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney II: Graduation from an accredited school of law, and two (2) years of experience in the practice of law; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Pay grade range is HP.35 $87,908 - $161,712- expected hiring range will be at the lower end of listed scale.)

For an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney III: Graduation from an accredited school of law, and five (5) years of experience in the practice of law; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Pay grade range is HP.37 $96,551 - $177,610- expected hiring range will be lower to mid range of listed scale.)

Additional Information

Juvenile court experience is preferred, including but not limited to domestic violence, and physical/sexual abuse of children. Prior experience with violent crimes, narcotics, gangs, organized crime, and human trafficking also welcome.


Eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.


This position will be filled at an Attorney I, II or III level depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate and the needs of the department at the time of hire.

Prior experience with violent crimes, narcotics, gangs, organized crime, and human trafficking and/or prior experience with juvenile and domestic cases is preferred.


A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
