Occupational Summary:

Perform journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, renovation and repair of School of Medicine Research buildings, additions, and fixtures; provide guidance and direction to labor team on assigned projects. Position reports to E&O Building Foreman.

Work Hours:

This position is primarily first shift Monday-Friday, but will be expected to work after-hours and weekend as necessary.

Work Performed

  • Perform journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, renovation and repair of Medical Center buildings, additions, and fixtures to include floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, and screens from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  • Operate woodworking equipment and machines to saw, plane, drill and mortise lumber for doors, cabinets, shelves, molding and related items; estimate the amount of required materials and supplies needed for projects; select type of lumber and materials needed.
  • Plan work for the group ensuring adequate staffing to complete projects in timely and efficient manner; report staffing issues to supervisor.
  • Interpret blueprints, plans, sketches and diagrams to properly complete assigned projects.
  • Monitor and inspect work to ensure compliance the applicable codes and procedures; direct any rework or modifications.
  • Enter time and close preventative and corrective maintenance work orders.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Example Regular Tasks

Below are examples of regular tasks experienced on a regular frequency. The below is not considered an exhaustive list, nor are these items intended to list all expected work tasks.

Daily:

• Prioritize and respond to regular preventative maintenance of building systems.

• Respond to corrective maintenance, as necessary to building systems or customer needs.

• Communicate regularly with team members and site leadership.

• Assist, as necessary with projects with other research Core Shops (Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical)

Weekly

• Attend necessary shop update meetings.

• Ensure work orders are being updated on a regular basis.

• Communicating to shop foreman about needs for efficient and proactive work.

• Provide updates to shop foreman about work load and ongoing or troublesome work

Monthly

• Communicate and prioritize overdue work orders to shop foreman.

• Complete necessary trainings to stay compliant with Duke Requirements.

• Attend monthly safety meetings for direct reports.

• (Quarterly) Attend quarterly Research Team All-Hands Meeting.

Annually

• Perform annual self- assessment performance review.

• Maintain CEUs as necessary.

• Attend additional trainings as desired and approved by site leadership.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

High School diploma or general education degree (GED).

Experience:

Work requires 5 to 7 years of broad experience in construction carpentry to acquire knowledge of the methods and techniques of the carpentry trade. Lead worker or project experience required.

Certificate/License/Registrations:

Valid N.C. driver’s license and a driving history acceptable under the guidelines of Safe Driving Policy required.

Skills:

Must have knowledge of OSHA, State and Local Codes, and NFPA Standards; good communication skills.

Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written, with coworkers, management and customers.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with shop work courses.

Experience

Work requires 2 years of broad experience in carpentry to acquire OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE knowledge of the methods and techniques of the carpentry trade.
