Finance Intern II - Accounting: This position is for a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The student will be assigned to work in Finance Department, Accounting Division. We seek students who are studying Accounting or Finance. The pay is $16.00 per hour. Summer internships will start May 16, 2025 and end by the start of the fall semester. Essential Duties
Finance Intern II - Accounting: This position is for a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The student will be assigned to work in our Finance Department, Accounting Division.
One of the main responsibilities of the Accounting Division is to prepare the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for each fiscal year ending June 30th. The County of Henrico financial report includes all funds and account groups of the “primary government.” The Accounting Division is responsible for general accounting, financial accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable and payroll. General Accounting includes bank reconciliations, capital assets, debt, grants and investments. The Division is also responsible for general accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, and payroll. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting the County of Henrico, Virginia for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. The County has received this certificate each year since FY1980-81. In 1998, the County received a triple A bond rating from the three major bond rating agencies. Henrico’s triple A bond rating places the County in a very select group of local governments.
Desired Area of Study: Accounting, Finance or related
Desired GPA: 2.50 or better
Desired Student: We seek to hire a college level student junior or rising senior.
Work Hours: flexible within the hours of 8:00 am – 4:30 pm M-F. Internships are limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week.
Work Location: Administration Building at 4301 E. Parham Road, Henrico, VA 23228
Expected Start Date: May 16, 2025 (based on the availability of the student selected).
Expected End Date: Start of the fall semester.
Internship Status: These are paid internship positions at the hourly rate of $16.00/hour, up to 29 hours per week.
The Intern may be a part of a variety of duties to shadow, perform or provide:
- General Accounting: bank reconciliations, capital assets, debt, grants and investments.
- Data Management: data entry, report creation and review, filing, copying etc.
- Research
- Assistance to the Payroll section
- Other duties as assigned
The desired student should have:
- Knowledge of accounting principles, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Account Analysis, Revenue and Expenditures, and financial Management strategies and fiscal/policy analysis.
- Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship.
- Excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively.
- Excellent attention to details; excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Ability to multitask and manage priorities; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team; and ability to meet assigned deadlines
Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of:
- Accounting and Financial accounting and reporting
- Investment and Cash Management Guidelines
- Accounts Receivable and related policies
- Management of State and Federal Grants
- Asset Management
- Accounts Payable and Payroll
- The responsibility for preparing and managing the County's Fiscal Plan, budget, and compiling and publishing the County's Five-Year Capital Improvement plan and special studies as directed by County administration for revenue or expenditure impact.

Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.Minimum Qualifications
Education: Pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA of 2.50 or better; prefer a current college student in one of the relevant degree programs.
Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience.
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the internship.

Interns are not entitled to a permanent position at the completion of an internship. The internship is designed to benefit the intern with the knowledge and skills gained through experiences provided during the course of the internship. All paid internship positions will work for 29 hours or less per week.
