General Statement of Duties

Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

Intern II/III: This internship is for current college students (undergraduate or graduate level students) within Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services. This internship will be for the Spring 2025, and it is for academic credit. Interns will start on or around January 21-27, 2025 (depending on the student's program requirements/school schedule the internship could start later and run into the summer 2025 semester).

Essential Duties

Internships with Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services are open to college students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate level degree in a field relevant to internship placement. Selection is dependent on the qualification of the successful applicant and the needs of the County for this placement.

Students must be eligible to earn academic credit for an internship in their program as a requirement or elective. Students who cannot earn academic credit are not eligible for this opportunity and should not apply.

Desired Area of Study: Social Sciences; Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Health, Nursing
Desired Student: Undergraduate or Graduate Level
Start /End Date: On or around January 21-27, 2025, depending on the students selected and their semester/program requirements. The internship will end when the student has satisfied all the requirements for academic credit or by the start of the next semester.
Hours: Flexible, evenings may be required depending on placement and curriculum requirements
Work Location: Interns will be assigned to Henrico Mental Health with Prevention Services. Location varies based on placement.

Internship candidates will be interviewed by agency staff to ensure placement is feasible for the student and the County/Agency. Students may have the opportunity to work in any of the following areas.

1. Prevention Services: Merchant Educator, Community Coalition and/or Community-based programing: for undergraduate level students

Examples of work may include:

  • Travel with Prevention Coordinator to selected sites to complete store audits and deliver merchant education materials.
  • Work with Henrico Too Smart 2 Start Coalition to aid in addressing specific substance use prevention and wellness.
  • Data Collection
  • Work in after-school programing with at risk youth in a community setting
2. Traditional adult outpatient services: for undergraduate and graduate level students


Examples of work may include:

  • Observing individual and group therapy sessions
  • Complete documentation in the electronic health record
  • Learn evidenced based models of care and how to implement them.
  • Track outcomes
  • Provide case management, case coordination, group and individual therapy with oversight.
3. Services for those with Serious Mental Illness: undergraduate and graduate level students


Examples of case management work may include:

  • Complete required documentation in the electronic health record
  • Interact with treatment team including the prescriber.
  • Provide services with oversight.
  • Interact with an interdisciplinary treatment team including the prescriber.

Examples of Lakeside Center work may include:

  • Assist with milieu management.
  • Observe case management and individual clinical assessments and psychoeducational groups.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational groups with oversight.
  • Complete required documentation in the electronic health record

Examples of Vocational work may include:

  • Observe initial meeting, assessment, and ISP process.
  • Observe and facilitate with staff employment groups.
  • Assist with acquiring job leads and job applications.
  • Assist with providing follow along services.
  • Complete documentation in the electronic health record

4. Youth and Family Services, graduate level students


Examples of work:

  • Observe individual case management and therapy sessions.
  • Complete documentation in the electronic health record
  • Interact with treatment team including the prescriber.
  • Provide case management and individual therapy with oversight.

5. Emergency Services, graduate level students

Examples of work may include:

  • Observe crisis assessments at the hospital, in the community or on site.
  • Assist with hospital bed searches
  • Work collaboratively with team to manage crisis situations.
  • Complete documentation in the electronic health records

6. Jail and Jail Diversion Services, undergraduate and graduate level students


Examples of work may include:

  • Observe case management and individual clinical assessments.
  • Observe crisis assessments in the jail setting.
  • Complete documentation in the electronic health record
  • Provide service in the community and/or in the jail with oversight.

Knowledge, skills, abilities: The student can expect to gain general knowledge, skills, and abilities in the delivery of prevention/treatment strategies may include depending on team placement:

  • Work in community-based settings
  • Develop knowledge of risk and protective factors in communities
  • Gain observation and data collection skills and develop an understanding of outcomes.
  • Deliver prevention and treatment information to community stakeholders.
  • Evidence-based programs with youth and families
  • Evidence-based treatment with adults with mental health and/or substance use concerns
  • Gain an understanding of the crisis response to mental health emergencies.
  • Develop real world skill in documenting clinical contacts.

Students should possess the following:

  • Strong attention to detail

  • An ability to accept feedback and adjust based on feedback provided.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship;
  • Excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively;
  • Excellent attention to details;
  • Excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Ability to multitask and manage priorities;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team;
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.

Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Pursuing a graduate (master's) degree, undergraduate or associate degree in a field relevant to internship; GPA of 3.0 or better desired;

Experience: Completion of college-level program in relevant degree program; relevant job, volunteer or previous internship experience;

Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
