Duke Department of Family Medicine and Community Health

STAFF DIRECTOR FOR EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION (EDI)

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in the Duke University School of Medicine is a diverse, robust, interdisciplinary academic department with programs focused on education and training, patient care and community health, consultations and collaborations, and research and scholarship. The Department is composed of five interdependent divisions — Community Health, Family Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, PA Studies, and Student Health — with a shared mission to partner with communities to improve health outcomes.

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Duke University's School of Medicine is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the dual role of Staff Director for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Research Program Leader. This role will be split equally, with 50% of the time dedicated to the responsibilities of the Staff Director and 50% to the duties of the Research Program Leader.

As the Staff Director for EDI, the successful candidate will lead and significantly contribute to the Department’s strategic vision of inclusive excellence. This individual will play a crucial role in addressing EDI topics across learning, curriculum, research, departmental culture, and recruitment. This position actively supports the Department's goals to cultivate an inclusive environment and reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer and the Vice Chair of Education and Faculty Development for EDI activities.

As the Research Program Leader, the candidate will also oversee, guide, and supervise the implementation of health/clinical research and community projects, ensuring alignment with the department's vision and goals. They will be responsible for setting research priorities, sourcing funding, and providing strategic leadership in research direction. For research and community project management activities not related to EDI responsibilities, this position will report to the Senior Research Program Leader.

Staff Director for EDI Responsibilities (50%):

Administration

  • Serve as a liaison to School of Medicine leadership, the Vice Dean for EDI, the Duke Office of EDI, and Duke Primary Care
  • Develop Department’s goals for EDI that embrace the strategic goals of the Duke School of Medicine, and develop Department-specific metrics to evaluate achievement of these goals
  • Collaborate with other Department leaders and trainees working in the EDI sphere

Education and Employment

  • Collaborate with Vice Chair for Education & Faculty Development to provide developmental and educational opportunities in structural competency and implicit bias for faculty, staff, and trainees
  • Work with Departmental leadership to promote an inclusive learning and working environment for trainees, faculty, and staff, including ensuring that evaluation systems are unbiased and promote equity

Data Collection

  • Analyze Departmental demographics related to race, ethnicity, gender, rank and tenure status for faculty, trainees, and staff and provide national comparative information to inform Department’s strategies, challenges, and opportunities
  • Evaluate EDI-relevant Departmental goals and implementation of EDI strategies, ensuring accountability for follow through

Pipeline/Recruitment

  • Assess the Department’s past successes and challenges in recruiting and develop effective strategies for outreach and recruitment of candidates from underrepresented backgrounds

Communications and Engagement

  • Develop plans for communication materials and regularly scheduled reports in partnership with Communications Coordinator

Research Program Leader Responsibilities (50%):

Program, Project and Study Management

  • Work closely with the faculty members and research team on goals, study feasibility, design, protocols, resources, and recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Evaluate research processes for improvements and implement recommended solutions.
  • Contribute expertise in research design to develop protocol and research proposals, emphasizing cultural diversity and competency.
  • Assist with budget development; monitor and adhere to the established budget.
  • Participate in, and provide oversight, for IRB submissions and documentation, regulatory and safety reporting, and adverse events
  • Assist with the development, selection, and implementation of data capture methods and protocol-specific systems and documents.

Science

  • Collaborate with stakeholders [statistical, operational, etc.] to ensure adequate design, implementation and testing of study aims.
  • Develop research proposals or protocols with little assistance.
  • Contribute significant writing and editing to grant and funding proposals and the development of investigator-initiated studies.
  • Read and analyze literature to assist with manuscripts and keep current on scientific advances.

Leadership

  • Serve as an expert resource for colleagues and teammates, assisting colleagues in identifying efficiencies and improving process.
  • Support colleagues and mentor junior staff in their project work
  • Provide leadership within the team including preparing for, leading and participating in team meetings, committees, task forces and ad hoc groups.

Ethics

  • Recognize and employ the professional guidelines and code of ethics related to the conduct of clinical research.
  • Know and follow policies, standard operating procedures [SOPs], regulations and protocol requirements that govern clinical research and maintain Duke and project specific training and certification requirements.
  • Summarize and clarify for study teams, the professional guidelines and code of ethics related to the conduct of clinical research

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Proven experience in leadership roles or health-focused education with a significant EDI component.
  • Established track record of fostering relationships and establishing credibility across diverse groups.
  • Adept at addressing and catering to the specific challenges faced by marginalized demographics.
  • Superior skills in both written and oral communication.
  • Proficient understanding of public health nuances, health disparities, or the broader framework of health equity.
  • Basic concepts of research protocol design
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with diverse community to move projects from caption to regulatory submission
  • Research experience in clinical and community health settings.
  • Experience with programmatic budget development and management.

Preferred:

  • Background in a professional setting that involves oversight of intricate programs and the knack for fostering collaborative efforts.
  • Experience with budget writing, tracking, and compliance
  • Experience in crafting, writing, and securing grants.

Preferred Education/Training:

Master's degree, preferably in health professions, social sciences, public health, or similar curricula.

Preferred Experience:

Work requires a minimum of four years of social/behavioral/clinical research or project management experience OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE and independence

1 year of experience submitting or supporting submission of grants and publications OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE and independence. A Master's degree may substitute for two years of related experience.
