Schedule Note: Some evening, weekend, and holiday work required.

Nature of Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean of Students for Residential Education will provide leadership to advance and integrate the QuadEx values of Belonging, Engagement, and Well-Being within our inclusive residential model and build relationships with our diverse on-campus residents, student leaders, and campus partners. Through the direct and indirect supervision of professional staff and student leaders, the Associate Dean of Students for Residential Education will lead staff and work alongside student leaders in fostering the values of QuadEx to promote a dynamic residential experience for Duke’s first-year students. The Associate Dean for Residential Education will provide leadership to advance various department initiatives and partnerships to support student well-being, campus vibrancy, staff development, and connections with faculty and academic resources.

Specific Duties

Residence Education and Strategic Partnerships- 30% of Effort

  • Build collaborative relationships with campus partners to advance the QuadEx values of Belonging, Engagement, and Well-being as an integral part of the residential experience. Key campus partnerships include but are not limited to: New Student and Family Programs (NSFP), DuWell, Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL), Duke International Student Center (DISC), Office of Duke-Kunshan University (DKU) Relations, and Cultural/Identity Centers.
  • Work with staff and student leaders to develop and maintain effective Student Councils; meet and work with student representatives from student groups to promote a vibrant student experience characterized by social community, peer accountability, and intellectual engagement.
  • Serve as a resource and conduit for staff and students to implement innovative strategies for community building and campus vibrancy for first years to connect with other and upper-class peers.
  • Serve as a co-advisor for the first-year residential student council (East Campus Council), serving as a conduit between the ECC and Duke Student Government (DSG) and other administrators and their offices.
  • Champion initiatives that engage students in out-of-classroom learning that enhances the academic experience. This will include working with the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE to support an ensure ongoing collaboration between the Residence Coordinator staff, student leaders, and Faculty-in-Residence.
  • Lead the assessment of the first-year residential interaction model designed to promote a sense of community and belonging through consistent RA-to-Resident and peer-to-peer interactions.
  • In consultation with the Sr. Associate Dean, lead the overall vision, strategic planning, and execution of an inclusive, comprehensive residential experience for first-year students and DKU students.
  • Serve as a College Academic Advisor to 3-6 first- and second-year students.

Supervision- 25% of Effort

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of a team of 5 Residence Coordinators directly as well as the indirect supervision of over 90 undergraduate, graduate, and professional student leaders.
  • Collaborate with department and campus partners to provide leadership for the recruitment, hiring, training, on- and offboarding of assigned professional staff.
  • Assess the job performance of direct reports and manage the performance appraisal process of extended staff, providing regular feedback and development through supervisory meetings.

Student Care and Outreach- 15% of Effort

  • Collaborate across the division and university to support students and families in proactive measures for promoting student well-being and care, as well as responsive measures during conflicts and emergencies.
  • Work with Dean of Students colleagues and academic partners to strategize developmentally appropriate responses to student behavioral issues and concerns.
  • Serve on the Emergency Dean-On-Call rotation responding to both on- and off-campus student emergencies approximately 3-5 times a year.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, serve as a senior-level conduct hearing officer, adjudicating significant student conduct cases including those directly impacting a student’s ability to remain on-campus.

Department and Divisional Leadership- 15% of Effort

  • Represent the Residential Education team on the Housing and Residence Life leadership team and the Student Affairs Leadership Council.
  • Represent the department in various divisional and university forums and committees.
  • Provide guidance, vision, and oversight to one or more department committees, workgroups, and/or projects connected to student leadership, staff training and development, large-scale events, assessment, marketing, etc.

Operations and Administration- 10% of Effort

  • Manage and oversee multiple budgets including general operating, campus programs and student council budgets.
  • Ensure adherence to established budgetary and financial procedures and deadlines, promoting excellent stewardship of institutional funds.
  • Support operational processes coordinated by the Residential Support Services team, including, but not limited to Opening/Closing, and Occupancy Checks.

Other- 5% of Effort

  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, Division and University goals and objectives.

Qualifications, Sills, and Competencies

Required Qualifications:

  • Education/Training
    • Master's degree in higher education, student personnel or related field.
  • Experience
    • Five years of experience working with college and university residential communities with a demonstrated history of increasing responsibility for supervision and managerial responsibilities. Previous experience as live-in staff is also required OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Strongly Preferred Experiences:

  • Previous experience in supervising professional staff.
  • Experience in collaborating and developing initiatives and programs focused on creating social activities, partnering with student leaders and campus staff and faculty partners.

Preferred Skills and Competencies (Adapted from ACPA/NASPA Professional Competencies)

The successful Associate Dean for Residential Education will be able to demonstrate at least a foundational proficiency in professional competency areas. However, intermediate/advanced proficiency in the following competencies are strongly preferred:

  • Advising and Supporting: Demonstrated ability in advising, supporting, and challenging student leaders/organizations, faculty, and staff; ability to use excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, including report writing; excellent active listening skills; ability to negotiate and resolve multiple complex problems in a timely manner, decision making, and goal setting in group situations; as well as the ability to follow established protocols to coordinate and lead crisis interventions and emergency response when necessary.
  • Organizational and Human Resources: Knowledge of appropriate financial procedures and practices in a university setting; demonstrated ability to communicate difficult/sensitive information; advanced proficiency with knowledge, skills, and attitudes used in the selection, supervision, motivation, and formal evaluation of staff as well as the effective application and supervision of strategies and techniques associated with risk management and crisis management.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as the ability and desire to actively partner with students, faculty, and staff across units and fields of expertise to “envision, plan, and affect change” and work toward common goals; excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Social Justice and Inclusion: Proven ability to create learning environments that center inclusion and equity practices and principles, as well as advocate and support the needs of a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Student Learning and Development: Possession of an understanding of current issues and trends in higher education to guide the work of staff and student leaders, as well as inform departmental practice.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Master's degree in higher education, student personnel or related field.

Experience

Five years of experience working with college and university residential communities with demonstrated history of increasing responsibility for supervision and managerial responsibilities. Previous experience as live-in staff is also required. OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
