SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs semiskilled general labor, maintenance, repair and upkeep work on the District grounds and landscaping, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. A job in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs grounds maintenance and upkeep for MPS facilities, including landscaping, athletics fields, and seasonal lawn care and snow removal.
  • Performs a variety of grounds and landscaping management activities, including fertilizing, weed control, mowing, planting, and watering procedures.
  • Cleans up trash and debris; prunes and trims trees and shrubs; inspects landscaped areas; loads and hauls materials.
  • Operates specialized grounds and landscaping maintenance equipment; assists in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and sprinklers; sweeps and cleans grounds, landscaping and adjacent areas.
  • Maintains athletics fields, and prepares for play and special events; grooms field and marks boundaries and technical frames.
  • Picks up and delivers furniture, equipment and supplies in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Operates a variety of trucks and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.

  • Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Federal and state safety rules and regulations related to duties performed.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Capabilities, operational characteristics, adjustment and preventive maintenance of the types of equipment to which assigned.
  • Use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to the work.

Skill in

  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Following and maintaining safety standards; recognizing potentially hazardous situations on the job site and taking appropriate action.
  • Adjusting and performing preventive maintenance on the equipment to which assigned.
  • Reading and understanding a variety of plans and maps.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed; working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Class B Minnesota State Commercial Driver's License (with no Airbrake Restriction) is required within six (6) months of date of hire. Continued employment is contingent upon maintenance of this license in a valid status.

Technical certifications for specialized equipment may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND two years of grounds and facilities maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.
