Job Description Summary

This position is responsible for the development and management of physician and advanced practice provider (APP) recruitment function for MUSC Health, as well as its affiliates. Leading a team of 20+ Physician and APP recruiters and staff, the Director has functional responsibility for recommending, negotiating, and mediating terms of agreement with recruited physicians and advanced practice providers. This position reports to the Office of the MUSC Health Chief Physician Executive.

Job Description

  • Leadership: Is accountable for strategic planning, program development, and overall administration, including budgetary management, of the Physician and Provider Recruitment Department staff and resources.  The Director leads an in-house physician and provider recruitment function for MUSC Health, as well as its affiliates. The Director is responsible for generating an increased number of superior physician and provider candidates. The Director must be able to successfully establish the superior attributes of MUSC Health in comparison to the wide choice of career opportunities available to candidates from competing organizations.
  • Program Development: Responsible for development and successful implementation of annual operating plan objectives. Participate in the development of strategic recruitment strategies and goals. Plans, organizes, schedules, and assigns all group work activities of the team to ensure proper and timely completion of work. Ensures timely resolution of day-to-day problems. Accountable for selling the Physician and Provider Recruitment program and services to organizational leadership. Assists with candidate visits including meeting with candidates and periodically conducting community and facility tours.
  • Recruitment: Works directly with leaders to fill physician and provider recruitment needs. May provide consultant services on compensation packages for new physicians or providers and improvement of recruitment efforts. Coaches leaders on practice readiness requirements that are essential to precede recruitment initiatives. Negotiates and interfaces with third party search firms. Responsible for weekly recruitment reports to MUSC Health executives. Provides direction, advice, and knowledge on recruitment trends to executives and statewide affiliates. Assists in closing deals with physician and provider candidates. Responsible for direct mail, telemarketing, E-mail and internal advertising, professional conferences, job fairs and recruitment/sales presentations and traditional networking with other recruiters.
  • People Management: Effectively manages assigned project staff, vendor and consultant personnel in a manner consistent with organizational policies and values. Plans, organizes, schedules and assigns all group work activities of the team to meet goals and objectives of the Physician and Provider Recruitment team and MUSC system. Assumes a leadership role in the professional development of project staff.
  • Continuous Improvement: Ensures optimal utilization of resources and quality while reducing cost.  Works with others to continually identify areas for improvement. Monitor, analyze, and track progress and actional plans related to recruitment key performance indicators or metrics (i.e., time-to-offer, posted positions, % filled, recruitment cycle times, vacancy rates, new hire turnover). Assumes a leadership role in the professional development of the staff to meet objectives of the organization.
  • Cross Organization Collaboration: Working with the MUSC hiring entities and Human Resources to: determine Physician employment eligibility and employment set up within the appropriate MUSC entity; understand benefit and leave eligibility as it relates to the MUSC hiring entity; and set up of Physician in WorkDay System (Position, Base Pay, FTE%, Job Profile, Employee Type, Employment Type, Leave, Benefits Eligibility etc). Requires innovation, in-depth knowledge of organizational and medical university policies and operational procedures. Understanding of institutional goals, priorities, and values regarding academic excellence, and diversity.

Additional Job Description

Required Education and Work Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 10 years of extensive physician and provider recruitment experience, of which 5 years are in a management role.
  • A demonstrated ability to market, negotiate and administer agreements with physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with physician and business partners at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with leading the development of a recruitment website and the use of social media as a recruitment tool.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:

  • CPRP Certification preferred.
  • Member of AAPPR preferred

Physical Requirements:

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs (+/) unassisted. Lift from 36” to overhead 15 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.  Ability to travel to various locations as necessary in the completion of job tasks.
