The Medical University of South Carolina James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine is seeking a Chair of Department of Advanced Specialty Sciences. The Department of Advanced Specialty Sciences (DASS) at MUSC's College of Dental Medicine comprises three divisions: Surgical Services & Applied Technology, Applied Craniofacial Sciences, Regenerative Sciences & Periodontology, along with a five graduate residency programs in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Digital Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Periodontics. Outstanding candidate may be appointed into an endowed position.
Chair is to mentor, grow and provide alignment with the College’s strategic plan and to increase collaboration within divisions and work with other Departments and units within the college.
The Chair of the Department of Advanced Specialty Sciences oversees all aspects of didactic and clinical predoctoral education in oral & maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and periodontics. The role involves mentoring faculty and staff, ensuring compliance with clinical requirements, managing educational grants associated with predoctoral clinics, and overseeing budgetary responsibilities. The division chiefs report directly to the Chair.

Job Description

The Chair of Department of Advanced Specialty Sciences carries out the following essential job functions:

  • Lead education, ensuring alignment with program objectives, competencies and accreditation standards.
  • Provide mentorship and supervision to division chiefs and guidance to faculty and staff
  • Collaborate with clinical affairs to enhance clinical education experiences and outcomes.
  • Oversee budgetary responsibilities for the department, including financial planning and resource allocation and ensure growth.
  • Participate in departmental and college-wide committees, meetings, and initiatives.
  • Be an active member of and work collaboratively with the Deans Leadership Council (DLC)
  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement within the department.
  • Maintain active involvement in professional development activities.
  • Guide the growth of residency programs to prominence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • D.D.S./D.M.D. degree from a CODA accredited dental school or foreign equivalent.
  • Completion of advanced education program and/or board certification leading to specialty certification in periodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics or oral & maxillofacial surgery is preferable.
  • Teaching experience in dental education and leadership.
  • Experience in clinical education administration and accreditation processes.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Eligibility for licensure or faculty dental license in South Carolina.
  • Qualified as a full professor with an outstanding track record in research and scholarly activities.

Collaborative Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the Dean of the College of Dental Medicine.
  • Work collaboratively with the other two department chairs; three Associate Deans: Clinical Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Hospital Affairs, as well as the Assistant Dean for Finance.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Dean for Innovation in implementing innovative methods in education, research, and continuing education.
