Position Description

The Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine offers an exceptional opportunity for a qualified medical educator to participate in the delivery of physiology content within the preclerkship phase of the integrated MD curriculum using multiple innovative pedagogies and mixed methods of assessment. The successful applicant will serve as a core preclerkship faculty member in cross-disciplinary teaching activities and academic coaching of preclerkship students, implement appropriate technologies that support excellent teaching and learning, and serve as a member of relevant curriculum and assessment planning committees that develop and continuous improve the school’s systems-based preclerkship curriculum blocks.

Position Requirements:

  • PhD in physiology or related field and at least three years of experience teaching clinically oriented physiology 
  • Experience teaching introductory physiology with expertise in endocrinology, gastrointestinal physiology and reproductive physiology in health and disease
  • Evidence of participation in development and implementation of curricula
  • Demonstration of excellence in teaching in lecture-based, classroom instruction
  • Interest in teaching utilizing various pedagogical approaches (e.g., team-based learning) and willingness to contribute to multidisciplinary biomedical instruction in both small group and large group settings
  • Experience with formative and summative assessment of medical student performance

Preferred Expertise and Experience:

  • Expertise in additional content areas, including anatomy, histology, and neurophysiology, would be highly valued
  • Experience and expertise in teaching using various pedagogical approaches (e.g., team-based learning)

This tenure-track position will be salaried, and the person selected for this position is expected to devote 75-100% effort to this role. Support for the remainder of the effort may be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the applicant and the needs of the home department.  Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with experience, and the academic department will align with the successful candidate’s background and experience.   • Strong leadership skills and ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, faculty, and students of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to create measurable goals, set timelines and meet deadlines
  • Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and an ability to approach challenges with flexibility, creativity and innovation
  • Experience with learning management systems and other educational platforms to support transition to virtual learning when necessary. Proficiency in software (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • A strong record of academic productivity and evidence of continued scholarship/research in areas of medical education
