Job Description Summary

The certified athletic trainer will support the efforts of the Rehab Services and Sports Medicine Departments at MUSC Health - Orangeburg, while concurrently supporting Orangeburg County School District and its student athletes.

Additionally, the athletic trainer provides administrative support to the attending provider as deemed appropriate. All practice is performed under the supervision of a licensed MUSC attending provider.

Opportunities are expected to be available to support fitness programming and other aspects of the MUSC Health's five (5) fitness centers in the region.

Job Description

1. Provide general patient care in a clinical setting: triage patients and prepare for provider exams and procedures; assist with exams, procedures and treatments as necessary; instruct patients in collection of samples and tests; administer prescribed medications, treatments and tests as ordered; observe record and report patient physical and psychosocial condition, reaction to medications and treatments to provider; respond to and triage incoming calls; instruct patient as ordered regarding treatment and/or medication. Call in orders appropriately as ordered by provider

2. Coordinate patient care: Maintain timely flow of patients, schedule appointments and referrals

based on urgency and availability; screen patients for appropriate information and provide

patient education as appropriate for diagnosis and treatment; maintain and review patient

records, charts and other pertinent information, communicating information as appropriate;

post-test exams results; review operative information with patient; educate patients in therapy

treatment plans; assist with cast/brace and preoperative and equipment when needed; be available to assist on days when requested (i.e., graft prep, patient flow, etc.); assists surgery scheduling and interface with central scheduling.

3. Maintain inventory and equipment: maintain exam room supplies, instruments and cleanliness

as required by OSHA and UMA; ensure accurate calibrations, cleaning and scheduled

maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, CLIA and UMA; track by

documentation.

4. Perform Clerical and administrative duties as necessary: Complete office forms for patients (i.e.

disability forms, FMLA forms). Attend in-services and meetings, participates in committees as

requested. Assist provider’s in scheduling appointments, depositions etc.

Minimum Training and Education:

1. Successful completion of the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (BOC) examination;

2. Current active certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer's Association;

3. Current active licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of South Carolina or gain SC licensure within 6 months upon selection for position;

4. Participation in continuing education (75 CEU's every 3 years).

Additional Requirements:

Ability to maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy.

Ability to work rotating shifts.

Ability to work overtime as required.

Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

To best assist the Sports Medicine and Rehab Services Departments in clinical practice, the Athletic Trainer should have the following qualifications:

1. Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or other appropriate field;

2. Possess previous Orthopaedic experience;

3. Have experience with clinical Orthopaedic operations.

Additional Job Description

Graduate of an accredited college with a BS/BA. (Masters degree in Athletic Training preferred). Certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers(BOC). Certified as an Athletic Trainer in South Carolina by DHEC. Must be able to adjust communication both verbal and non-verbal to interact appropriately and effectively with a wide variety of age groups including school age adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Weekend and evening hours to cover practices, games, tournaments, and special events.
