Join a team that’s Changing What’s Possible – The Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) nationally recognized Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks an academically-oriented, board-certified General Surgical Pathologist with experience and/or interest in Bone and Soft Tissue. MUSC, Charleston Division, is the quaternary medical center for South Carolina and a comprehensive transplant center and includes the Hollings Cancer Center, Ashley River Tower hospital, Shawn Jenkins Children’s / Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion Hospital and the Main MUSC hospital. The Hollings Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated center in the state. The Surgical Pathology section has subspecialty expertise including GI/Liver Pathology, Breast Pathology, GYN Pathology, GU Pathology, Bone/ Soft Tissue Pathology, Head and Neck/Endocrine Pathology, Pulmonary Pathology, Placental Pathology, and Renal Pathology. Our Department has approximately $5 million dollars in extramural funding annually and is consistently ranked in the upper half of pathology departments in the United States for National Institutes of Health funding.

We are seeking

  • Academically oriented candidate with 1-3 years of post-fellowship experience is preferred; current fellow/recent graduates will be considered
  • MD or equivalent degree with pathology specialty training and certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology
  • Fellowship in Bone and Soft Tissue or Surgical Pathology fellowship with Bone and Soft Tissue focus would be desirable
  • Board certification in AP or AP/CP
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in South Carolina
  • Experience in fostering collaborative relationships with colleagues, clinicians and researchers as well as serving as the diagnostic resource for Bone and Soft Tissue surgical cases and resource to technologists at the bench
  • Participation in clinical and/or translational research endeavors is expected
  • Excellent communication skills, work ethic, and team player approach to patient care
  • Ability to instruct medical students, participate in the training of pathology residents and surgical pathology fellows, and actively participate in the academic mission of the Hollings Cancer Center adult and pediatric programs and Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor board

MUSC Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

  • Collaborative team composed of 55 faculty
  • High quality training programs with 20 residents who have had a 100% board passage rate for the past 7 years and 10-12 fellows in a variety of subspecialty areas
  • CAP, AABB, ASHI, and FACT certifications and accreditations
  • The Department offers a surgical pathology fellowship program (3 positions) as well as ACGME-accredited fellowships in Cytopathology, Neuropathology, Hematopathology, Dermatopathology and Molecular Genetic Pathology.
