Job Description Summary

The Department of Surgery is actively recruiting for an Early Violence Prevention & Intervention Client Advocate. This individual will work with high-risk youth through MUSC’s Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program (TTVIP), a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP). Based out of MUSC Health – Charleston’s Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma centers, TTVIP aims to prevent and reduce community and interpersonal violence among youth and young adults by providing comprehensive wrap-around, multidisciplinary services to address patients’ underlying risk factors and social determinants of health. The purpose of this role is to provide early intervention to adolescents at high risk of experiencing community violence who are referred to TTVIP by MUSC providers. Early intervention services include performing need & risk assessments, mentorship, case management, service navigation, resource referral, and long-term client and family support.

Job Description

Pay Range:

$31,561.00 - $44,977.00 - $58,393.00 (min - mid - max)

Job Duties:

  • 35% - The advocate will identify and connect patients to services for healthcare and mental health, substance misuse, housing, employment, education, healthy relationships, criminal justice advocacy, arts and recreation programs, and other resources as appropriate to address patients’ risks, needs and goals. 
  • 25% - The advocate will provide long-term case management services to patients, including performing risk and needs assessments, developing action plans with patients, and coordinating multidisciplinary, cross-sector services to address individuals’ risk factors for violence exposure and social determinants of health.
  • 20% - The role will work directly with patients and families who are identified as having multiple risk factors for violence exposure at MUSC Health – Charleston’s pediatric inpatient and outpatient settings. This role will accept referrals from MUSC providers and initiate outreach for enrollment in TTVIP.
  • 15% - This role involves documentation of the provision of all services in patients’ medical charts and TTVIP’s case management databases. This data is recorded for the purposes of documentation of the intervention, quality improvement, program evaluation, research, and grant writing and reporting.
  • 5% - The advocate will participate in related program activities including trainings, meetings, and other events. Similarly, this role supports hospital and community outreach and education to engage and educate students, healthcare providers, community members, and other stakeholders on evidence-based violence prevention and intervention strategies and trauma informed care.

Additional Job Description

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Ability Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, psychology, health education, or other human services field, or associate degree in the same fields with at least 1 year of relevant experience preferred. Experience in community violence prevention and intervention or trauma-informed support services preferred. Experience working with diverse, high-risk youth required. Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Experience in motivational interviewing, mentorship/peer counseling, goal-setting, and case management preferred. Experience documenting service provision preferred. Experience with the Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) strongly preferred. Driver’s license to support client and community outreach activities required

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and two years relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
