Job Description

Job Purpose:

Working in concert with MUSC leadership, this position will be responsible for overseeing the local affairs and economic engagement function within the external affairs department as well as managing key external relationships in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This is a system-wide leadership role and will have four direct reports – individuals who work in the Orangeburg, Pee Dee, Catawba, and Midlands regions. Responsible for extending enterprise partnerships across the system and overseeing and implementing the local affairs and economic engagement strategy across the state. Working in concert with the MUSC Health Charleston Division CEO and other Charleston-based enterprise leaders (academic, clinical, administrative), this position will also be responsible for relationship management of key external stakeholders in the Lowcountry area with a special focus on community, business, academia, non-profits, and industry. The role requires collaboration with the Office of Government Affairs and Community Engagement, Clinical Affiliations, Business Health, and the Office of Institutional Advancement given their responsibilities with key external stakeholders including elected officials, government agencies, companies, and donors.

Education and Work Experience A bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of relevant experience in marketing, business development, and community engagement preferably in the healthcare industry. A degree in business, marketing, public relations, or communications is preferred, but not required. Work experience in the industry, or the private sector, and/or an MBA or MHA is preferred, but not required.  

Additional Knowledge and Skills: Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills; stellar program management skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills; diplomatic, balanced approach to business; strong negotiation, listening, and presentation skills; advanced analytical and critical thinking skills. Candidate must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and navigate challenging situations and recognize opportunities. Experience with a customer relationship management (CRM) database tool as well as advanced PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office suite skills. Attendance at some early morning and evening meetings/events will be required. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required.

Degree of Supervision

This person is under the direct supervision provided by Executive Director, External Affairs. This individual will also have a dotted reporting relationship to the Chief Strategy and External Affairs Officer.

Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 25 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 25 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.  Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces

Job Duties (list job tasks)

  • Lead the local affairs and economic engagement strategy for the organization.
  • Systematize the approach and partnership development and management processes including widespread use of CRM and project management tool, Monday.com.
  • Serve as the direct report for the external affairs leads in Orangeburg, Pee Dee, Catawba and Midlands divisions.   
  • Build, maintain, and enhance long-lasting relationships with external stakeholders. Identify and conduct research on external stakeholders and potential partners.
  • Extend existing MUSC partnerships across the state.
  • Understand and master the MUSC enterprise to connect external stakeholders to appropriate internal resources. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the MUSC’s tripartite mission (education, research, patient care) and priorities to articulate needs to partners and the community.
  • Maintain and refresh MUSC’s local affairs and economic engagement strategy on a biannual basis in concert with the Division CEOs and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage and solve challenges with stakeholders as well as related internal challenges with ability to escalate as needed.
  • Interact and coordinate with partners and internal stakeholders to operationalize collaborations and partnerships.
  • Prepare reports on status of external stakeholders; brief, communicate, and prepare members of the leadership team on progress. Prepare accurate and compelling proposals.
  • Assist in the development of new partnerships and collaborations including innovative business models and new ways of interfacing with external entities.
  • Represent MUSC at community and business events which will require public speaking and strong leadership skills and may require travel.
  • Create and manage a portfolio of 25-75 high-impact, local stakeholders through personal interactions.
