Job Description Summary

The Director, Partnership Strategy and Development in the Office of Strategy and External Affairs will dual report to the Executive Director of Strategy and the Executive Director of External Affairs. This position is responsible for developing MUSC’s partnership strategy, partner selection, and business model development in addition to overseeing the deal process from start to finish. In collaboration with the Chief Strategy and External Affairs Officer, the Director is responsible for understanding key national and global health care and higher education trends and ensuring MUSC is leading health innovation for the lives we touch by establishing the right strategic relationships with industry and other key stakeholders. Working closely with strategy and external affairs leadership, the Director develops partnership strategies and negotiates deals that assist MUSC in achievement of our OneMUSC strategy and tripartite mission.

Job Description

Required Minimum Education and Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years demonstrated relationship management, business development, strategic planning, and deal making experience
  • Advanced knowledge of higher education, health care business and strategy
  • Experience working with partner organizations and consultants in developing business or operational plans and other activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial modeling and budgets
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to lead and work collaboratively and effectively with multi- disciplinary, cross-functional teams, and with executives, providers, faculty, and staff at all levels

Preferred Education and Work Experience:

  • Masters degree in business, healthcare, public health or related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with health care and higher education industry
  • Experience in large academic healthcare setting

Additional Knowledge and Skills:

Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills; diplomatic, balanced approach to business; strong negotiation, listening, and presentation skills; advanced analytical and critical thinking skills. Candidate must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and navigate challenging situations and recognize opportunities. Experience with a customer relationship management (CRM) database tool as well as advanced PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office suite skills. Attendance at some early morning and evening meetings/events will be required. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required.

Job Duties (list job tasks) Specific:

  • Understand key industry trends in health care, higher education and adjacent industries to ensure MUSC is leading health innovation through partnerships
  • Oversees partnership strategy development and partner selection process
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop and maintain strong, strategic, and meaningful relationships with the leadership of partner organizations.
  • Executes partnership deal negotiation and development
  • Works closely with the Executive Director of Strategy to ensure partnerships and collaborations align with the OneMUSC strategic plan
  • Cultivates strong working relationships with peers and MUSC senior leadership across the enterprise and tripartite mission.
  • Ongoing innovation that targets new approaches/programs that add value to current and potential partner relationships.

Finance and Operations:

  • Assists in the development of business plans, Pro Forma, and budgets for partnerships in conjunction with other project teams such as Finance and IS.
  • Responsible for identifying resource needs and obtaining appropriate funding/approvals for partnerships with the support of leadership in the Office of Strategy and External Affairs.

Leadership:

  • Represents strategy and external affairs leadership in work groups and committees as requested.
  • Demonstrates strong ability to influence, motivate, and enable decision making.
  • Creates an inclusive environment that supports and respects diversity to promote creative problem solving.
  • Interacts with diverse levels of leaders demonstrating strong negotiation and facilitation skills and a proven ability to consult with executive levels of management as needed. Can serve in an advisory capacity to executive level management and stakeholders on significant and serious matters.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Creates and presents formal communications and effectively facilitates meetings to influence decisions and reach consensus.
  • Works with communications and marketing to ensure successful announcement of partnerships upon deal closure.
  • Demonstrates an advanced ability to work in a complex-cross-functional environment.
  • Model a collaborative leadership style that empowers others through effective communication.
  • Collaborates and communicates with others to engage additional resources and subject matter experts to complete deals.

Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs (+/-) unassisted. Lift from 36” to overhead 15 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
