Job Description Summary

The Nurse Extern performs routine duties within the limits of training and certification in caring for the hospitalized patient. The Nurse Extern may be cross-trained to operate as a Unit Secretary depending on the demands and needs of the unit in which they are assigned. The care is rendered under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Performs other duties related to the work described herein.

Job Description

Assist with the care of patients as delegated by the RN with ADL’s, performs patient care tasks and maintains a safe clean environment. The current employee must be in an accredited nursing school. Provide secretary/clerical assistance. Task may include, but are not limited to, vital signs, accucheck, ambulation, simple (non-sterile) dressing changes, toileting assistance, patient transport to other departments, answering the phone, faxing, preparing charts.

Education:

High school graduate

Complete Clinical Competencies required for assigned area before working off orientation.

Experience:

Currently enrolled in a nursing program and maintaining education requirements of Nursing Program.

Licenses/Certificates:

AHA BLS required.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
