TITLE: Grounds Supervisor

REPORTS TO: Senior Manager for Buildings and Grounds

SCHEDULE: Full Time 40 hours per week. Typical work hours are Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm. Weekend and overtime hours may be required; flexibility is required. This position is considered *essential personnel. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs.

Position Purpose

Provide effective leadership for Grounds and Facilities Management Garage by supervising and assigning the day-to-day maintenance and operational needs. Oversee the Academy’s grounds, and athletic fields, and provide support for woodlands and trail system. Responsible for ensuring landscape and exterior facilities are safe, aesthetically pleasing to established standards, and functionally adequate for defined programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise grounds personnel by managing attendance, work assignments, and quality assurance of landscape, hardscape, athletic fields and trails.
  • Conduct personnel assessments, including 30/60/90 day evaluations, annual performance reviews and coaching/training.
  • Document quality and behavioral deficiencies and conduct disciplinary warnings and Performance Improvement Plans (PIP).
  • Coordinate maintenance operations including daily and seasonal work tasks to maintain drainage systems, roads, walks, parking lots, lawns, trees, planting areas, athletic fields (grass and synthetic), and trails.
  • Utilize computer applications and work order system to schedule and assign work required to maintain, repair and improve the campus landscape.
  • Lead maintenance programs for all grounds equipment.
  • Utilize computer applications for management and monitoring campus irrigation systems.
  • Coordinate removal of ice surfaces in the PEA Ice Rinks.
  • Supervise installation and removal of PEA docks and Town dock system.
  • Utilize computer applications to review and approve time and attendance for staff payroll and leave requests.
  • Ensure tasks are performed efficiently and in accordance with department quality standards.
  • Promote department cross-training opportunities for staff on equipment operations and facility maintenance needs.
  • Lead the call-in procedure of personnel for snow and emergency weather situations.
  • Support the Senior Manager with direction of snow and ice actions and overseeing snow removal contractors.
  • Operate all motorized and non-motorized small grounds machines, and tractors with implements, (i.e. York rake, aerator, over seeder and sweeper, large rotary mowers, and forklifts).
  • Maintain a clean and orderly grounds office, equipment, vehicles and storage areas.
  • Take the lead on developing requirements and ordering supplies for grounds and athletic field maintenance.
  • Assist with quality assurance on contracted services.
  • Assist the Senior Manager on development of budget requirements and tracking of annual operating budget.
  • Attend meetings as required and communicate effectively both orally and in writing within all levels of the campus community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Must be proficient utilizing computer software for maintenance, management, time and attendance and irrigation monitoring.
  • Ability to safely operate grounds equipment, machines, and drive standard transmission vehicle.

  • Knowledge of snow and ice removal operations preferred.

Direct/Indirect Reports

Grounds Persons, Horticulturist, and Garage Mechanic.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Associates degree strongly preferred or equivalent of 3+ years’ supervisory experience and training.
  • New Hampshire commercial G2 applicator pesticide license - supervisory level with the ability to obtain the G1 applicator license within 24 months.
  • Training in areas of landscape management, horticulture, or related field.
  • Education and training in landscape operations, turf management, pesticide application and irrigation required.
  • Professional certifications preferred in the areas of grounds keeping, landscaping, horticulture, arboriculture or sports turf management.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in grounds operation and use of machinery required.
  • 3+ years supervisory experience and training preferred.
  • Experience with grounds equipment, operations and maintenance.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.

Physical Requirements

  1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, lift and transport a minimum of 50lbs.
  2. Must be able to climb and operate equipment.
  3. Must be able to work in confined areas and areas subject to extreme heat and cold temperatures.

Additional Requirements

  1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
  3. Must consistently wear assigned uniform and equipment and adhere to the appearance guidelines.
  4. May be required to handle hazardous materials in the work area.
  5. *Essential personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed directly by designated personnel during emergency events or inclement weather.
