Job Description

Supervises studies, surveys, inspections and research projects to detect and identify the extent of pollution, contamination and general sanitary conditions. Prepares narratives and statistical reports pertaining to environmental quality and health programs. Provides technical assistance and advice to the public, public officials, consultants and industrialists on matters related to environmental quality. Supervises a field staff; plans and conducts in-service trainings and staff development programs. Conducts standard, non-standard and specialized industrial hygiene inspections or consultations of industries to detect and identify potential occupational health hazards in the workplace. Performs sampling for air contaminants and noise to determine actual employee exposure levels. Prepares technical reports on inspections or consultations that include notes, photos and descriptions of alleged hazards found during the inspection or consultation. Develops procedures for review and approval of plans for use of radioactive materials and other radiation sources. Conducts decontamination procedures in case of radiation accidents. Reviews, evaluates and approves radioactive material users license and registration applications where appropriate. Supervises or conducts health survey investigations and inspections. URM emergency response team participation which includes a schedule that has shifts that rotate for both on-call (overnight and weekend coverage) and trouble call (Monday - Friday) coverage.

30% - Conduct safety assessments and program stewardship for workplace safety and health programs.  Program areas include but are not limited to:  chemical hazard identification, assessment, use, storage, and transport, laboratory safety, respiratory protection, ergonomics, indoor air quality, ventilation, hood and biosafety cabinets, confined space, hazardous energy, waste management, fall protection, air quality, noise, spill prevention & response, injury/illness prevention, etc.  Interprets and provides feedback and education for federal/state OSHA regulations and other regulatory and good industry safe work practices and guidances.   

25% - Develop and implement written policies, procedures, safe work practices, job aides, training content, intranet content, and documentation standards needed to benchmark and demonstrate compliance for regulatory and industry standards, guidelines and recommended MUSC practices.   Initiate opportunities and complete actions for continuous improvement, efficiency, and fiscal responsibility.  

25% - Complete regular and periodic regulatory and department reporting and reports, including regular updates and progress to assigned programs, tasks, continuous improvement initiatives, etc. Maintain and review accuracy of reports, communications, and program documents for customers and vendors.  Initiate and document projects, regulatory compliance activities and reports, injury/illness intervention and investigation, and other compliance and safety promoting activities for MUSC or other stakeholder organizations (OSHA, EPA, SC DHEC, TJC, etc.) Serve as an active member of the department's Emergency Response Team, performing on-call on trouble-call duties on a periodic scheduled basis.  Complete and maintain 40 hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification and other team requirements (periodic meetings, knowledge and skill requirements, electronic training modules, hands-on activities, preparation and use and guidance documents,etc.)  Properly prepare, respond, electronically document, and track incident responses, actions, and team training. Participate and support company emergency management events/conditions. 

20% - Provide focused assessments and reviews for laboratories, chemical use and storage areas, clinical areas and other high hazard or improvement initiative program areas.  Interact with health and safety program staff, vendors, and contractors along with departmental representatives to review and promote health and safety program compliance, quality work, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and three years experience in environmental health programs or radiologic health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for two years of the required work experience. Some postions require the possession of a valid Driver's license. Some positions require the successful completion of specialized courses in health physics or certifcation as a health physicist.
