Job Description

The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina (JBE CDM) is seeking applications for an Assistant Dean for Innovation. Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean’s primary role is to engage constituents collaboratively to develop a vision around innovation in all its ramifications and particularly implement strategies that will direct activities intended to sustain JBE CDM’s status as a preeminent stature.  This is a full-time, tenure track position at the Associate Professor/Professor level.

Main Responsibilities. The Assistant Dean will help JBE CDM meet the MUSC 2025 strategic goal of creating a culture of innovation and support that will impact patient care and learning experiences. The Assistant Dean will have an evidence-based approach to facilitate identifying and implementing new technologies in patient care. S/he will be in charge of training students, residents, and faculty to become familiar with these technological developments and will evaluate outcomes to monitor implementation effectiveness.

At the University/Enterprise level, the selected candidate also will serve as the primary liaison between JBE CDM, industry, and the MUSC ecosystem for activities pertaining to innovation. S/he will serve as the CDM representative on the MUSC Innovation Roundtable chaired by MUSC’s Chief Innovation Officer (CInO) and will work closely with the CInO to foster a culture of innovation within CDM. S/he will create and facilitate innovation-related continuing education programs that will be managed from and for the benefit of the College.

In addition, s/he will pursue and obtain grants and donations to implement the vision and sustain continuous technological development and improvement. Furthermore, the following are expected from the Assistant Dean:

  • Digital workflows and emerging technology
    • Explore new technologies that can be implemented in patient care and lead the process to choose and implement the ones that will contribute to the CDMs mission and strategic plan.
    • Coordinate clinical activities among predoctoral students and the digital dentistry residency
    • Work with Department Chairs to create a cohesive digital dentistry didactic and clinical curriculum that expands throughout the four years of the DMD program
    • Engage faculty to generate a significant number of publications in peer-reviewed journals about different aspects of digital dentistry (clinical, education, etc.)
    • Engage all departments/divisions to create opportunities, raise awareness, and implement digital workflows
  • Innovation
    • Create and lead an innovation steering group within CDM to coordinate activities and implement strategies
    • Serve as the liaison between the JBE CDM, Office of Innovation, MUSC Foundation for Research Development (technology transfer), and ZIAN (MUSC accelerator), and the AI Hub (MUSC-Clemson partnership for AI)
    • Create across-the-campus interdisciplinary collaborations and opportunities  

Other Responsibilities. In addition to clinical and patient care obligations in the Dental Faculty Practice, the position will participate in teaching activities involving DMD students and residents. Service on JBE CDM and other University committees also is expected.

Requirements. The ideal candidate will be a master clinician with excellent proficiency in Digital Dentistry technology and its application in all areas and specialties of dentistry. A track record in innovation and administrative experience also is expected. Previous experience working in an academic environment and advanced specialty training are preferred. High impact scholarly activity is preferred with history and current corporate or other funding.

The candidate must be a strong communicator and have a positive personality conducive to developing a compassionate, respectful, and productive work environment.

Successful applicants must have a DMD or DDS degree and should qualify for a South Carolina dental license. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with experience.
