Under medical supervision (surgeon and/or Registered Nurse) facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures and ensures the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions appropriately, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

Drapes patients for surgical procedures.

Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and performs terminal cleaning.

Maintains and cares for equipment and supplies.

Troubleshoots equipment and documents maintenance and repairs

Performs more complex surgical assisting duties to include:

Provides visualization of the operative site by securing retractors, packing with sponges, digital manipulation of tissue, suctioning, irrigating, or sponging.

Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with permanent hemostasis for clamping and /or cauterizing vessels or tissue, tying and/or legating clamped vessels to tissue, applying clips and placing local hemostatic agents.

Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with temporary hemostasis for applying tourniquets, vessel loops, non-crushing clamps, direct digital pressure and participating in volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques.

Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes to include, running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material of wound layers, muscle and fascia; subcuticular closure techniques, closing skin with method and postoperative subcutaneous injections of local anesthetic.

Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings, including liquid or spray occlusive materials, absorbent material and immobilizing dressings.

Providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand for periods up to twelve hours, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, talk, hear and smell; lift 50 pounds 50% of the time and up to 100 pounds 50% of the time; possesses the fine manual dexterity; close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen move up/down or left/right), dept perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet away) and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus).

Mental Requirements:

Must possess the ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical, or technical procedures or regulations; ability to write reports, correspondence and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees and medical staff; perform basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide); define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.

Population Served:

This position primarily interacts with all age groups, genders and ethnicities and provides direct patient care.  All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, cultural and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

Additional Job Description

High school diploma or GED and a Surgical Technologists First Assistant Certification required. Three or more years’ experience in the OR as a CST or Surgical First Assistant.
