SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours/week. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs. May be considered essential personnel depending on occurrence/event.

Position Purpose

Provide effective leadership for the carpentry, painting, masonry trades and assigning the day to day maintenance and operational needs for maintenance, repair, and alterations of campus buildings and structures.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise assigned personnel by managing attendance to ensure sufficient coverage, work assignments, and perform quality assurance for installation, repairs, and preventative maintenance on all campus buildings and structures.
  • Conduct personnel assessments, including 60-day evaluations, annual performance reviews and coaching/training.
  • Document quality and behavioral deficiencies and conduct disciplinary warnings and Performance Improvement Plans (PIP).
  • Utilize computer applications and computerized maintenance management systems to schedule and assign tasks by monitoring daily and frequently to be proactively assigning work orders to appropriate trade personnel.
  • Observe and report, through the work order system, all defects, deterioration and wear and tear on the facilities
  • Assist supervisors of other shops with campus-wide maintenance.
  • Assist Senior Manager for Buildings and Grounds with administrative record keeping for preventative maintenance programs.
  • Ensure each work crew has ample material, stock and supplies to complete job requirements.
  • May, as directed, be required to monitor and coordinate outside contractors.
  • Assemble, construct and install and repair structures and fixtures in or on Academy buildings, including floors, walls, partitions, ceilings, molding, window sash, form work, framing, blackboards, bulletin boards, doors and bookcases, furniture, counters and roofs.
  • Install and tape drywall, ceiling and floor tiles, flooring and other material for new construction or renovations.
  • Install and repair architectural hardware, including hinges, latches, door closures and locks.
  • Alter and repair furniture or fixtures such as chairs, desks, cabinets and bookcases.
  • Prepare wood or metal surfaces for finishing with primer, paint, or polyurethane
  • Set up, adjust and clean carpentry equipment.
  • Fabricate metal storm frames for screens and storm windows.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.

Trades personnel in the carpentry, painting, masonry shops

Position Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required. Skilled trades certificate or Associates degree preferred.

Experience

  • 5-8 years’ experience in carpentry and painting trades required.
  • 5 years’ experience with being a supervisor or foremen preferred.
  • Experience with methods, tools and equipment of the trade including: wood materials and their properties, techniques of taping sheetrock, plastering and painting; proper glass cutting techniques; and proper wood turning techniques.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and employees must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift.
  2. Ability to lift and transport a minimum of 50lbs without assistance.
  3. Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).

Additional Requirements

  1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
  3. Will be required to wear personal protective equipment as appropriate for the work assignment.
