The Media Relations Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing effective media relations strategies to promote MUSC and its strategic initiatives. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, proactively seek media opportunities through well-crafted pitches, and ensure consistent and positive media coverage. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong communication skills and a proven track record in media relations with experience working in health care and education.

30% Media Strategy and Planning – Develop and execute a comprehensive media relations strategy that is aligned with organizational goals and priorities.

Success Criteria:

  • Develop a comprehensive annual media relations strategy that includes goals and KPIs that are aligned with organizational goals.
  • Coordinate with writers and directors for content development and sharing of stories. 
  • Identify key media outlets, journalists and influencers and develop a relationship management plan with these key contacts.
  • Update all media contacts at the national, state and local level within Meltwater on a regular basis.
  • Plan media briefings and other events to develop relationships with media.
  • Collaborate with the media relations team to cascade featured stories statewide.
  • All other duties as assigned.

35% Media Outreach – Serve as one of the institutional spokespeople interfacing with media to build and maintain a positive public image for MUSC.

Success Criteria:

  • Develop daily media relations reports for key organizational leaders.
  • Develop a quarterly media relations report for key organizational leaders summarizing the media activity.
  • Create a monthly pitch report detailing pitches to the media and what stories were picked up.
  • Write press releases and media pitches to deliver to the media via Media Tool.
  • Develop new contacts in media engagement tool. Maintain existing contacts and regularly review for accuracy.
  • Respond promptly to media inquiries and facilitate interviews with key MUSC stakeholders and spokespeople.
  • Use social media to develop relationships with key media contacts.
  • All other duties as assigned.

30% Crisis Communications – Manage and mitigate the impact of unexpected and potentially damaging events on an organization's reputation through timely communication that maintains public trust.

Success Criteria:

  • Develop timely and transparent messaging to disseminate to stakeholders, media, and the public during crises such as natural disasters, accidents, reputation risks, or other emergencies.
  • Lead PR team’s crisis communication response, including the on-call schedule and other workflows that will be followed during times of crisis.
  • Evaluate the team’s response to these events and develop protocols to improve the crisis communications process.

5% Analytics and Reporting - Track and analyze the performance of PR and web-related initiatives for the digital news center.

Success Criteria:

  • Collaborate with PR and Communications team members to develop KPIs to evaluate effectiveness of media coverage and media outreach efforts.
  • Complete training on all platforms necessary to pull PR data and analytics (Google Analytics, Meltwater, etc.)
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Proven experience in public relations and media relations.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with media outlets and journalists.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and handle crisis situations effectively.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Proficient in using media monitoring analytics tools such as Meltwater.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a strong command of grammar and AP style.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Creative thinking and adaptability to changing communication trends.
     

Physical Requirements: 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • May be required to kneel, squat, or stand for extended periods to capture images.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of related work experience is required; 7 years of related experience is preferred.
