Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences invites applications for a full-time, 12-month non-tenured faculty appointment to serve as the Coordinator for Student Affairs for the hybrid format of the Occupational Therapy Doctorate OTD) Program. This eight-semester OTD program is a blend of online and on-campus activities that provide the same curriculum as the residential program. This hybrid position allows the faculty member to live remotely; however, OTD faculty members must be able to travel and stay in Charleston for designated periods each semester for teaching and/or required program events. The successful faculty candidate is expected to enhance current teaching and mentoring activities within the OTD program, develop a scholarly agenda, and participate in community and professional service appropriate to a senior faculty member. Combinations of areas of clinical expertise are welcome, and we encourage interdisciplinary and diverse perspectives. 

Preferred candidate qualifications:

Ideally, we seek a collegial individual who either has a terminal academic doctorate in a discipline appropriate for teaching responsibilities (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) or a post-professional occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) with a National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) or certification credentials appropriate for their teaching responsibilities. This is a non-tenured track faculty position with a salary and rank commensurate with qualifications. Ideally, we seek candidates with more than six years of experience as a faculty member. We prefer candidates who have previously achieved the rank of Associate Professor or Professor who must have a proven and strong track record of scholarship, graduate student advising, teaching at the Doctoral level, and preferably some research funding. Additionally, the successful candidate will understand higher education and contemporary clinical practice appropriate for leadership in occupational therapy and knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting didactic and clinical education, students, and the profession of occupational therapy within the United States. The candidate will also need to seek a license or be eligible for licensure in South Carolina (or compact) in addition to their state of residence. Successful candidates should possess excellent communication skills and strong computer skills to meet the needs of our online didactic instructional format. We desire a team-oriented colleague who is willing and able to collaborate and share instructional methods and student-learning activities. We are also eager to identify candidates who genuinely appreciate evidence-based teaching, technology integration within the classroom, and building a student-centered community within the online classroom. 

Administrative Responsibilities:

The successful candidate serving in the Coordinator of Student Affairs role is expected to develop and oversee the coaching and mentoring activities within the OTD hybrid program and enhance current teaching and student retention within the OTD hybrid program. This individual is responsible for the intersection of program mission, unique delivery of curriculum, and student success. This candidate should be able to develop processes and procedures to encourage student success across the program in collaboration with the residential program. Specifically, the coordinator of student affairs (CSA) functions include support for hybrid program orientation, progression and retention, and advisement. CSA responsibilities include forming advisory groups for each OTD cohort in their respective program (hybrid or residential), facilitating the election of advisory group student leaders, training faculty advisors, and ensuring ongoing faculty compliance with the program. This individual works to integrate MUSC OTD hybrid students into MUSC culture and serves as the primary point of contact/liaison for student services for student issues related to distance learning life. Additionally, the CSA will work with advisors, course faculty, and students to address academic and non-academic emergencies or urgent issues. They also serve as Chair of the Professionalism Committee (hybrid format), oversee student advisement, academic progression and retention, professional behaviors, scholarship, and awards, and provide recommendations to the OTD hybrid  director and faculty for informed decision-making.

Essential Tasks and Functions

Director of Student Affairs specific:

  • Assimilates students into the OTD program immediately following enrollment offer acceptance and orientation.
  • Coordinates and oversees the clinical coaching and mentoring program.
  • Serves as the hybrid-OTD program liaison with the MUSC CHP Student Services.
  • Provides for Student Services support during onsite.
  • Oversees students' academic and professional behavior performance.
  • Supports hybrid OTD student orientation and graduation functions.
  • Works closely with program personnel who assist with student affairs and records administration (i.e., OTD Administrative Coordinator).
  • Coordinates all activities of the Professionalism Committee.
  • Coordinates the ongoing development and review of regulations, policies, procedures that meet accreditation standards and achieve program goals and expected outcomes, to include: Student, faculty, and program policies and procedures as reflected in the OTD Hybrid Student Handbook.
  • Ensures all policies, procedures, practices are following accreditation standards.

Teaching and Education Responsibilities:

Teach courses as agreed upon with the OTD Division Hybrid Director in the OTD hybrid program.

Service Responsibilities:

Based on the rank status of the faculty member, service should be at least at the state, national, or international level. All MUSC OTD hybrid faculty will participate in the Program/Division and Departmental service.

Scholarship Responsibilities:
