The Teaching Intern Program at Exeter Summer is an opportunity to experience teaching at a residential school. Interns are paired with and led by an experienced faculty mentor who works closely with them, preparing the Intern to co-teach and ultimately teach independently by the second or third week. Interns will learn and practice the Harkness teaching method, a student-directed roundtable discussion. In addition to time with students in the classroom, Interns will have separate meetings with their mentor and the Intern Coordinators.
Residential life is a key component to the Intern experience at Exeter Summer. Interns become part of a dorm team with experienced faculty who all work together to create a positive experience for students, many of whom have never attended a boarding school. Interns share in overseeing the residential program and live in dormitories in a single student room on a floor occupied by students and share bathrooms.
Dormitory responsibilities include working with a number of advisees, sharing dorm duty on some weeknights and weekends, and establishing an adult presence in the residence halls. Interns will be assigned chaperoning responsibilities for off-campus excursions, on campus activities, and dorm social functions; interns will also receive assignments for student arrival and departure days. Interns will attend weekly Residential Life meetings for guidance, training, and support.
